Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Couto
Hi Eva, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Most of my earliest memories are all linked to creativity, and I’ve been called the ‘artist’ of the class for as long as I can remember, and that sense of wonder and desire to break free from the norm stuck with me through the years.
After getting my Communication Design college degree, I jumped into the corporate world as expected thinking I’d find a creative outlet there. But after a not-so-great experience and what I can only describe as wearing someone else’s clothes – stiff, boring, and not at all me – I took a leap of faith, left the corporate world, and ventured on my own, something my college self would’ve called me crazy for.
Over time, and as I focused on celebrating individuality by helping small business owners who don’t fit into the usual boxes show their personalities through their branding, I outgrew having my personal name as my brand name.
Today, after rebranding into Flying Colours Creative, I feel incredibly lucky to work with ambitious & creative clients who are unafraid to break the mould and deserve to be seen under the spotlight.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Creative fields are traditionally seen as not-so-great career paths, and many of us don’t get the support we need from our friends and family because of it. That was NOT my case all all, for which I’m forever thankful.
In fact, the biggest obstacle I faced was going along with everyone else’s expectations.
During my one & only corporate experience — a design internship at a 5-star hotel — I was faced with a toxic traditionalist culture that didn’t allow for any form of self-expression, rewarded working extra hours and even encouraged getting freelance clients that paid off the books to make up for a 3.5€/hour salary. That almost stripped me of the design skills I worked so hard at in college, my confidence as a creative and my love for design.
And even when everyone else called me ‘crazy’ for quitting after just 2 months (when every single other job opportunity required *years* of experience), I was lucky enough to have a partner to encourage me to just go for it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Flying Colours Creative, I specialize in creating bold, quirky, and unconventional branding that truly stands out. My work is all about helping small business owners embrace their unique personalities and turning those quirks into their biggest brand assets.
I don’t believe in following trends or fitting into moulds and many clients come to me feeling unsure about how to present themselves or their businesses. Instead, I encourage them to break free from the norm and embrace what makes them different. Through our work together, they regain the confidence to show up as the face of the brand, clarity on how to intentionally use design to move towards their goals and end up catapulting their brands into the spotlight high above the rest.
My designs are not just about aesthetics; they evoke emotions and bring a sense of playfulness & boldness that’s missing in the online business landscape.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
This is such a cliché answer but the reality is that I owe a huge part of my success to my amazing clients. Their trust and willingness to embrace bold, unconventional branding have not only fueled my creativity but also provided me with endless inspiration. Working with clients who are as passionate about their brands as I am about designing them has been a dream come true.
But I have to take this opportunity to thank not only my friends & family, who’ve been there from day 1 and believed in me even when I didn’t, but also all the fellow creatives in my troupe who I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with to create out of this world brands.
