Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Petters
Hi Elizabeth , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up in conservative Christian churches, I spent a lot of my childhood-early adulthood years questioning who I was outside of my religion. I knew that as an adult I wanted to create a safe space for people whose religious upbringing had greatly affected their way of viewing themselves and the world around them.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Questioning religious doctrine in many faith practices is not supported. As soon as I started the journey of being true to myself and my beliefs I noticed pushback from my faith community. I have felt incredibly misunderstood throughout this process. If you haven’t been raised in organized religion it may be hard to understand by there is a very clear “us” and “them” and i felt as though I quickly became a “them” when I started to push back on some of the things I felt the church was doing that were not okay.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
For as long as I can remember I have loved to create: acting, singing, writing, arts and crafts. I love to take a bunch of random things and make them into something. As an adult I have been able to take my creativity and my faith journey and make it a career as both a writer and co-host of the Deconstructing Mamas podcast. My podcast was a dream for a long time and in 2021, along with my co-host, we were able to bring it to life. At the time I was a mom to two very small children and I am incredibly proud of what we have built. Our goal for this community is to create a space of conversation around faith, parenting, religious trauma recovery, and spirituality.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I continue to see there being a need for safe spaces to process religious differences as more and more people question their religious upbringings. Even in the past 5 years we’ve seen a surge of podcasts, books, summits that recognize the difficult journey of recovering from harmful religious practices and experiences.
