Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Little
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The story begins with me as a child, I always was drawn to art. During elementary and high school, art was my favorite subject and I remember being excited about any new art assignment/project given, then acing the project and sometimes even seeing my work in school art shows. During my younger years I also spent most of my weekends with my God Mother Leketha, who was a hair stylist and makeup artist. She would be asked by my mother to babysit me, she would say yes however she’d always have to work and due to that my mother would drop me off at her job (Dynastie’s Hair Salon) and I’d just wait in the salon lobby for her to finish her shift; little did I know sitting in a salon for hours as a kid watching her work, I was unintentionally soaking up the techniques of how to transform a client with cosmetics. As a young adult, I fell in love with makeup while applying it to cover my severe cystic acne and the more I wore it the more I loved it and once I started getting questions from people like “are you a makeup artist?” I took it as a sign to be one. First I practiced on my friends for about 2-3 years before I gave myself that title. Applying makeup on someone else I found was a natural gift (it was a full circle moment when I found myself using my God Mother’s techniques to do faces). While still practicing makeup artistry, I enrolled in esthetician school where I learned how to make makeup, the basics of skin and protecting it when applying makeup, etc. After I graduated in 2019, I began brainstorming on launching my own makeup line as I started to identify what the industry was missing (quality and connection), with that Flavor was born and during quarantine I shopped around and spent all of my time testing products for a minimum of 2 years before launching. Today, I work for a number of agencies as a makeup artist and in my free time I set Flavor Cosmetics’ shop at my God Mother’s very own salon (now called Ink’s Upgrade) to demonstrate and sell it to clients getting their hair done. I started off doing this periodically as a test but Flavor’s quality is love at first sight and now we are there every weekend!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest obstacle that I am facing at the moment is marketing. I’ve never fully comprehended marketing so recently I’ve hired a marketing director for Flavor Cosmetics Co. and she is teaching me the ins and outs of how marketing works, algorithm, how to catch a potential customer’s attention, formulas, etc. I do believe it is the missing link for putting Flavor on the map and day by day I’m understanding it more and more.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
yes that my makeup line Flavor Cosmetics will be an exhibitor in the makeup show Chicago this year on 11/16 and 11/17, please feel free to purchase a ticket to come and see us!
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Happiness is a choice, no one is responsible for it but you. I also believe that happiness is found in something that makes sense, something that has a rhyme/reason; like makeup application for example can make someone’s day (like a bride), it can be a source of income by selling makeup products or even becoming a chemist as a career choice. Being in the makeup business has shown me that there is always positive domino effect that comes along with it and that as a business consumer makes me happy.
