Today we’d like to introduce you to E. Alexcina Brown
Hi E. Alexcina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Writing has always been a way of self-expression for me. Growing up I was a bit shy around people I didn’t know, so I’d write to express my feelings and thoughts and even conjured up excitement in my imagination. In my professional career, I wrote blogs and content for websites about products/services that didn’t interest me. I then decided to start back writing for myself.
As an adult, I dealt with various life experiences in which I felt alone. Life obstacles, such as heartbreak, affected me more than I knew. Amid these obstacles, I started writing and formulating my own fictional stories behind them. Once I began, I developed the idea of creating a book series highlighting different scenarios. These scenarios range from ignoring red flags and breaking my heart to choosing myself. These characters represent me in various phases of life and have allowed me to learn more about myself and how to deal.
Sharing my stories in a book allowed me to release those hurtful feelings and show others they weren’t alone in going through the same things.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
With anything, it hasn’t been a smooth road. But a learning experience. I was able to tap into the business side of writing and publishing and honestly, I’m still learning.
For example, I didn’t understand the importance of keeping my book in rotation. Of course, there’s hype and excitement built around releasing a book. Since I don’t have a publishing team behind me, it’s my job to ensure I’m reaching more readers.
Another struggle was working to get the book released. There are a lot of moving parts and decision-making within the process. I had to learn book formatting, copyright information, research where to publish, and how these platforms work. It was tough but now the process is easier than when I started.
Fortunately, by making mistakes in trying to understand the self-publishing process, I can help others. I’ve even started outlining things I’ve learned and mistakes that I’ve made along the way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a self-published author and blogger. I write under the pen name The Blakk Dahlia. I chose this name based on the real “The Black Dahlia” and the mystery behind her life and death. I took that as a challenge to tell my own stories: The good, bad, and, ugly, and to remain true to myself in my writing.
Since 2018, I’ve released five books under the series, “the Heartbreak Diaries”. The romance-suspense series dives deep into the hearts we love, like, or lust with when approaching dating, relationships, marriage, and even situationships. What’s unique about this series is the “hearts” in each book telling their story from a real and vulnerable place. Each book has a “dear diary” moment from an integral character, displaying their logic and true intentions within the heartbreak.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
If you’d asked me a year ago, I’d say resilience. But as I look over my journey and where I want to go…it’s FAITH. You have to believe that things will work out. There are moments when I take a break or want to give up for good. But I remind myself why I started and why I love to do this. Having faith in what I’m writing and the vision behind it have been a silent driving force.
There are some visions you can’t shake, and you need to believe there’s a reason why you can’t stop visualizing it.
