Today we’d like to introduce you to Dina Konovalov
Hi Dina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started as a clueless art school graduate thrown in the world of unknown with a big dream and tons of bills to pay. It was 1999 and I just graduated Mass College of Art with a photography degree. Dot coms were booming and I quickly got a job photographing restaurants, businesses and events around Boston for Ticketmaster. Getting laid off was a blessing in disguise as I was forced to become a freelancer (aka business owner) right away.
With multiple side jobs along the way, I stuck with photographing whatever I could get paid for which meant a lot of weddings, family photos, etc. As I grew to like this genre, I’ve started to book out more and more and eventually formed a large company catering to families and events with a business partner and over 15 freelancers working for me. The company was booming but I wasn’t doing what I loved and found myself managing more than being creative so I decided to go on my own again and focus on what I love doing.
Since then, I’ve opened up my own company – Dina K LLC specializing in stylish portraits and visuals as well as creative content-creation studios and haven’t looked back.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As an artist, I had zero business knowledge or experience and it took me years to understand the ins and outs of running a profitable business while staying true to my craft. I would balance out the lack of formal business training with passion for making my dream work. There has been many good and bad and scary (covid) years but giving up was never an option for me.
Business owners and artists these days have to face and embrace A.I. competition. I’m hopeful that with something as personal as a portrait, people will continue to value the human connection that makes 90% of a great photo.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in editorial style photography working with small and medium brands, corporations, entrepreneurs and creatives. I’m known for my ability to connect with my subject and capture their true essence while guiding them with ideas, posing, styling and magazine worthy lighting. With over 25 years of professional experience, multiple awards and celebrity clients, I never stop looking for the next thing to be proud of :)
Along my creative journey, I also found a love for spaces and am now offering content-creation studios for rent. I’m in the works of adding videography services to my clients soon too, stay tuned!
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
