Today we’d like to introduce you to Debbie Walker
Hi Debbie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been painting my entire life, and although I had the privilege of building and selling two companies and spent years in the corporate world, my true passion has always been art. For the past decade, I’ve focused on that passion, creating commissions, participating in art galleries and shows, launching a card line, and most importantly, educating beginner watercolorists. Teaching others is what I truly love.
Last year, I took a leap and started a YouTube channel, having no idea what I was getting into. To my surprise, it flourished beyond my expectations! I’ve grown a supportive community, collaborated with watercolor brands I admire, and connected with so many wonderful people. A year later, I’m proud to have almost 50K subscribers, over 3 million views, and my very own brush line. I’m so grateful for all of it, even though I work every single day.
Looking ahead, my next goal (and on my vision board!) is to publish inspiring books for new artists and to build a small team to help spread the joy of watercolor even further.
I hope to continue growing, inspiring, and encouraging as many people as I can to fall in love with this beautiful medium, just as I have.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely has been challenging learning the ropes, tech, marketing, and handling the technical side of all of it.
It has also been the most rewarding thing I have done, the work I have enjoyed more than anything I have done in life.
Mostly struggling to learn, and keep up, learn the ropes of what it takes to be where I am today!
As well to be the “small” artist among many that have been on YouTube for much longer than I !
Im proud to say im doing great and love every minute of it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m truly grateful to be known for the joy I bring to teaching watercolors and the way I make it inspiring, fun, and accessible for everyone. It means so much to me to take the intimidation out of learning this beautiful medium and connect with those who have struggled with new challenges. Watching them let go of self-judgment and embrace creativity with a sense of fun and play is what I love most. Seeing them walk away with something they’re proud of fills me with such joy!
What makes my approach unique is my deep passion for what I do, and my enthusiasm for turning something that might seem difficult into something approachable. I love guiding those who say, “I’m not an artist” or “I can’t paint” to discover that they can do it. Their excitement when they tell me they love their ‘oops’ moments and see the beauty in their so-called accidents is what inspires me. When they start enjoying the process, letting go of criticism, they begin creating truly amazing and beautiful things!
I don’t believe in rigid rules. My philosophy is simple: do what you love, love what you do, and always find something to appreciate in every piece. There is no “wrong” way to create art, and I’m so thrilled that I can remind people they are artists in their own unique way.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Ray my husband has been a support from the very beginning always reminding me to do what I love, that everything im creating is magical, always reminding me of how many people i touch, and what Im sharing with so many. My Mom has always loved what I do, and encouraged me supported me, he also works on most of my tech, helping me plan, and my rock that keeps me balanced and focused, as well as my daughter, who constantly tells me how proud she is when I feellike im not sure im asa good as I want to be! My youngest alyssa, has always been the one to say, dont pay attention to the critics, dont listen, know how amazing you are, and let the rest go.
These have helped me so many times when I might question, am I diong the right thing? also to remi nd me I am diong what Im meant to do!
