Today we’d like to introduce you to Dean Pagano.
Dean, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey in the art world began at a young age, driven by an innate passion for visual expression. Over the years, I honed my skills and developed a unique style that resonates with my inner vision. Establishing Pagano Studio in New York City was pivotal, allowing me to showcase my personal artworks and paintings on a larger scale.
Throughout my career, I’ve remained dedicated to pushing the boundaries of my craft, whether through intricate drawings or expansive canvases. The series “Mind Your Space” is a testament to this, where each piece undergoes multiple iterations to reveal new dimensions.
Despite challenges, such as the ceiling collapse of my studio, which temporarily disrupted my workspace, I’ve continued to create and adapt. This resilience is reflected in my recent projects, including the artistic short film Recording in Chaos, which I made in collaboration with Colin Tunney.
Parallel to my visual art, I channel my creativity into music with my band, Ditch the Mold. This dual pursuit enriches my artistic perspective and allows me to explore different facets of expression.
My path is marked by a commitment to authenticity and an unwavering drive to evolve. Each piece I create, whether in art or music, is a step forward, and I’m grateful for the support and opportunities that have shaped my journey.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been anything but smooth, yet each challenge has been a vital part of my growth as an artist. One of the most significant struggles was the collapse of my studio ceiling eight months ago. This event left me without a home or workspace, forcing me to adapt and find new ways to continue my practice. Amid this chaos, I created the “Final Echoes” series—oil drawings on paper that emerged from the rubble of my destroyed studio. This work was captured in the film “Sketches and Storms: The Last Artworks from My Studio Before Disaster.” The film poignantly documents the resilience and creativity born from such adversity.
Balancing my dual passions for art and music has also been challenging. Managing Pagano Studio while deeply involved in my band, Ditch the Mold, requires constant juggling. However, this duality enriches my creative perspective, with each field informing and enhancing the other.
Creating a sustainable career in the arts involves its own set of hurdles. Building a strong, reputable presence takes time and relentless effort. There have been moments of doubt and financial strain, but these experiences have taught me the value of perseverance and the importance of community support.
Despite these struggles, each setback has offered valuable lessons and opportunities for creative growth. They have shaped my journey, reinforcing my commitment to my path and deepening my appreciation for the art I create.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work spans visual art and music, two fields that deeply inform and enhance each other. At Pagano Studio, I create a diverse range of artworks, including paintings, drawings, and mixed-media pieces. My style is characterized by a commitment to exploring the depths of human experience, often through intricate, layered compositions that invite viewers to look beyond the surface.
Over the years, I’ve developed several notable series. One such series, “Squares of Truth,” captures the dynamic interplay between nature and modern urban landscapes, reflecting the tension and harmony within these environments. Another significant series is “Lucid Dream,” where I delve into the subtleties of human emotion and interaction, using muted tones and minimalist compositions to convey eerie narratives.
In addition to visual art, I am the frontman of the band Ditch the Mold. This musical endeavor allows me to explore different facets of expression and brings a dynamic energy to my overall creative practice.
My relentless drive to push boundaries and continually evolve my craft sets me apart. My work is not just about creating art; it’s about building a narrative and connecting with my audience. The duality of my artistic and musical pursuits provides a unique perspective that enriches my creations, making them resonate on multiple levels.
I am most proud of the resilience and authenticity that define my journey. Despite significant challenges, such as the collapse of my studio, I have remained committed to my path and continued to produce meaningful and impactful work. This dedication, coupled with the support of my community, has been instrumental in shaping my career and artistic vision.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is the power of resilience and adaptability. Life as an artist is filled with unexpected challenges and setbacks, from financial difficulties to physical disruptions. These experiences have taught me that it’s not the obstacles but how we respond to them that defines our path.
Resilience has allowed me to turn adversity into creative fuel.
Adaptability has also been crucial. Navigating these two worlds requires constant flexibility and a willingness to embrace new opportunities and challenges. This has enriched my practice, allowing me to evolve and explore new dimensions of expression continuously.
Ultimately, the lesson of resilience and adaptability is about maintaining a steadfast commitment to my vision while remaining open to change and growth. It has reinforced the importance of perseverance, community support, and staying true to one’s authentic voice, no matter the circumstances. This mindset has been instrumental in shaping my journey and continues to guide me as I move forward in my career.
