Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Bero.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started writing when I was 5years old. My mother got me a Highlights 4 Kids magazine so that I could practice reading. I got published in the magazine at six years old, and from there I knew that I wanted to be a poet forever. I kept a composition notebook on me from that moment on.
Where exactly am I today, though? I’m not sure. But I guess some people would say that it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey and the moments of joy and the dopest people you collect along the way.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think the hardest part about being an artist is living in the world of capitalism. Being forced to believe that one has to consistently monetize their art to make ends meet or having to worry about making it palatable for social media or certain audiences. It takes away from purely creating. I miss the days as kids when we could play and make things and it just was, nothing more.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a full-time educator, supporting failing schools and turnaround models. Outside of my full time work, I am a poet and filmmaker, and host open-mics.
I think I’m most proud of not letting my morals and work ethic be tainted by the outside world. And regarding what sets me apart from others, I just never give up, even when I want to. Even when things feel so untenable, I’ll throw a little fit and then go even harder.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
People are generally terrible, but even with that, sometimes they’ll still surprise you in a positive way. And with that, I revel in the occasional surprise that yields beauty and community connections.
