Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Pfister
Hi Christine, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Pentimenti Gallery was originally founded by my husband, Tom. After a few years, he passed the leadership to me, encouraging me to nurture the gallery’s development. Over time, this role has been extremely fulfilling, bringing me immense satisfaction and a sense of purpose. I’ve learned to distinguish between professional relationships and personal connections, and despite the business aspect of my role, I’ve formed wonderful friendships with artists, curators, and collectors. Working within the art community through Pentimenti Gallery, in Philadelphia, and wherever my work takes me around the world, has brought me great joy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Over the years, two of the most gratifying aspects have been the close bonds I’ve developed with the artists and the people I collaborate with. The gallery’s forward-looking, curatorial commitment to presenting rigorous, socially minded works by young and mid-career artists has not only fostered exciting artistic talents, it has also provided a nourishing incubator for arts professionals to thrive in various capacities.
On the other hand, the most challenging part of my role is handling the administrative tasks required to maintain the gallery’s success. It is the most tedious aspect of my job.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Pentimenti Gallery follows the white cube model of most art galleries, providing an environment where art takes center stage in a clean, uncluttered space. The focus on presenting artworks without distractions is important to me. The gallery presents innovative and cutting-edge contemporary art in a cohesive aesthetic. Each exhibition demonstrates a deep understanding of the relationship between art, materiality, and innovation, with each artwork telling a unique story created by our artists’ unique point of views.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Navigating the art world can be challenging. It requires ongoing attention to emerging trends and a dedication to curating high-quality exhibitions while supporting all the artists in your program. Amidst the hustle and bustle, it’s important to maintain a sense of grounding and focus. The art world can sometimes feel overwhelming, so it’s crucial to stay steadfast and resilient. Hold on to your principles, even when it’s challenging to maintain them.
