Today we’d like to introduce you to Chloe Charles
Hi Chloe, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
ECHLO is borne out of Chloe Charles‘ journey ECHLO is borne out of her disillusionment in the music industry. ECHLO is borne out of her rejection of society’s hallow obsession with success. ECHLO is borne out of her refusal to accept genres, labels and boxes. ECHLO is borne out of her relentless love of experimentation.
ECHLO is borne out of her transformation to motherhood. ECHLO is borne out of her need to connect as a solo artist.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. The journey of ECHLO, borne out of my own disillusionment with the music industry and rejection of society’s shallow obsession with success, has been anything but easy. Initially, I found myself struggling against the constraints of genres, labels, and expectations. The path I was on, performing jazz- and folk-infused music under my name Chloe Charles, was rewarding in many ways. I toured extensively, played over a thousand shows across ten countries, and received acclaim and awards. However, I felt a deep yearning to explore beyond these confines, to challenge myself and embrace novelty.
In 2018, I made a bold decision to press reset and venture into new, uncharted territory. This transition was daunting, as it meant leaving behind a familiar and relatively successful path. It was a leap into the unknown, creating music driven solely by my own vision from my bedroom in Toronto and my family art studio in Ontario. This new direction came with its own set of challenges, including the need to rebuild and redefine my identity as an artist.
During this period of transformation, the world paused, and I embraced the changes in my personal life. I became a mother of two, went back to school to get a diploma in Creative Writing, wrote a book, and immersed myself in the visual arts. These experiences deeply influenced my music and led to the creation of my album “I Was I.”
The road to ECHLO was paved with moments of uncertainty, but it also led to profound growth and fulfillment. Embracing collaboration and connection with artists worldwide, I found a deeper meaning in my work. This journey taught me to focus on intent, social critique, and genuine expression, even when it meant stepping away from the conventions and security of my previous path.
Looking back, the struggles were essential to my evolution. They pushed me to be daring, to connect with others, and to become more than just an individual artist. The challenges I faced have ultimately shaped ECHLO into the embodiment of who I am today—an artist unafraid to critique societal norms and explore the depths of my creative spirit.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an artist who thrives on defying conventions and pushing creative boundaries. My work spans various mediums, from music to visual arts, and is driven by a relentless love of experimentation. Under the moniker ECHLO, I’ve embraced a solo career that allows me to explore and create without the constraints of genres or labels. My music blends electronic soundscapes with driving beats and subversive social critiques, reflecting the concerns and defiance of my generation.
Specializing in unflinching storytelling and sonic exploration, I’m known for imbuing my work with intent and a sharp critique of societal norms. Songs like “Head High,” which reached #1 on the CBC Music Top 20 Chart, and “Got Me Drinkin,” featured on CBS Television’s series “Charmed,” showcase my unique approach. My music has also found its way into notable spaces, such as the Netflix series “Elite” and the Montreal Jazz Festival.
I’m most proud of the album “I Was I,” which was born out of a period of profound personal and artistic transformation. During a global pause, I became a mother of two, went back to school for a Creative Writing diploma, wrote a book, and dove deep into the visual arts. This album represents a culmination of my experiences and a true reflection of my growth as an artist.
What sets me apart is my refusal to accept societal conventions and my commitment to genuine expression. ECHLO is not just about music; it’s about connecting with others and creating a synergy that transcends traditional artistic boundaries. Collaborating with visual artists from around the world and exhibiting in places like the Art in Space Gallery in Dubai and Palazzo Marino en Musica in Milan are testaments to this interdisciplinary approach.
In essence, my work is a response to a society that often feels sick and disconnected. Through my art, I aim to foster connection, mutual support, and deep fulfillment. My journey has been about more than just personal success—it’s about challenging norms, embracing transformation, and finding meaning in every step.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is the value of authenticity and staying true to oneself. Throughout my career, especially during the transition from Chloe Charles to ECHLO, I’ve faced numerous challenges and pressures to conform to certain expectations and norms within the music industry and society at large. However, it was in those moments of struggle and disillusionment that I discovered the power of embracing my true creative vision and rejecting the confines of genres, labels, and societal standards.
I’ve learned that genuine expression and authenticity resonate more deeply with others and create a more meaningful and lasting impact. This lesson became particularly evident during my period of personal transformation, where I became a mother, went back to school, and explored new artistic mediums. It was in this space of growth and self-discovery that I found a deeper purpose and a stronger connection with my art and my audience.
Staying true to myself has also taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability. The journey hasn’t always been smooth, but embracing my unique path has led to profound personal and artistic fulfillment. I’ve learned to trust in my vision, take risks, and continuously evolve, which has opened up new worlds of collaboration, creativity, and connection.
Ultimately, the most important lesson is that authenticity is the foundation of meaningful art and a fulfilling life. By staying true to who I am and what I believe in, I’ve been able to create work that not only reflects my own journey but also resonates with and inspires others.
