Today we’d like to introduce you to Caity Gyorgy
Hi Caity, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started singing when I was a child and was an active member of various choirs throughout high school, but it wasn’t until I got my first paid gig when I was 17 singing at an event hosted by the mayor of my city that I considered pursuing music as a full time career. Around the same time of that gig, I fell in love with vocal jazz and swing music. I went to college in Toronto where I received my Bachelor of Music (Jazz Voice) and went on to study in Montreal for my Masters of Jazz Performance degree. Since graduating in 2022 I have recorded multiple albums, two of which are JUNO Award Winning. I have toured across Japan, Mexico, Canada and the United States, and have worked and recorded with some of the best jazz musicians in the world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the struggles are exactly what you would expect they’d be in a male dominated field. The “guilty until proven innocent” mindset is the most obvious setback. Having to constantly prove that I can “hang with the boys” and sing just as well as they can play used to really upset me, now that I’ve gained a little bit of recognition for my work I don’t run into that problem as much, and I find it kind of amusing when it does happen, but I feel for the young people facing constant baseless dismissal for the way that they look.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a singer, composer, lyricist and bandleader. I’m known for my albums and performances where I showcase my songwriting and my vocal improvising (also known as scatting). I’m proud that I’m able to successfully manage all of the roles of my profession and that I’m able to inspire others to write and perform their own music.
I think one thing that sets me apart from others in my field would be my composing in the style of the Great American Songbook with the lyrics to match.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was always interested in music. I went through several genre phases – Beatles/Classic Rock, 80s New Wave, 2010s Alternative, Motown, and eventually settled on Jazz, and I haven’t found a style of music I’m more in love with. Of course, all of the other genres were incredibly formative and I still love them to this day. Regarding my personality, I’m not exactly sure what I was like – I like to think very curious and driven. I remember always trying to do well in school. I think I was a bit of a “goody-goody”, but I enjoyed (and still enjoy) being ridiculous with my friends.
