Today we’d like to introduce you to Brionne Beck
Hi Brionne, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Over a decade ago, I set out to make a simple moisturizer from natural ingredients that my skin would love. I had always had very sensitive skin that was prone to breakouts and rashes. I thought I was being careful by purchasing lotions that were ‘for sensitive skin’ and ‘unscented’. Little did I know, there were still so many nasty ingredients in those moisturizers that didn’t agree with me. Once I started carefully reading labels for my food, I turned that consciousness over to skincare products. After reading through lists of unpronounceable synthetic ingredients, I decided that I should try to make a natural, simple body balm. I bought a variety of natural plant butters and oils to experiment with. It took a while to get the right consistency, but my skin reacted positively to all of them. It was deeply satisfying to take back control of what was going on my body. I felt powerful in a way because I was no longer beholden to large corporate brands that didn’t have my best interest at heart. I vowed to stop giving away my hard-earned money for products that weren’t helping. Today, I’m so proud to be able to share that amazing Body Balm with you along with the rest of our product line.
I’ve worked hard to build a brand where people can shop with confidence and know that there’s a real person on the other end, making their products from real wholesome ingredients, and that I really care! At Unfiltered Skin Care, we seek to combine wholesome organic ingredients with sustainable packaging for truly effective skincare for all.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are always bumps along the road whenever you’re trying to do something big or go against the flow. I’ve had to learn how to formulate all of these products, and different properties of each ingredient. It’s a lost of information to retain but it’s also fun to learn! I love that there’s an endless amount of knowledge to be gained!
Some of the aspects of running my own business have seemed daunting. Tax season used to fill me dread. Learning different inventory programs and then programming each ingredient and bottle into that system has been exhausting. However, like anything, the biggest part is just doing it. Once it’s over, I realize that it really wasn’t that bad and now I have a new skill! I love that there is no limit to how much I can grow in this role.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I take simple ingredients, some that you probably have in your kitchen right now, and make them into clean, effective, gentle skincare. I create products that make taking care of your skin easier, more approachable, and do that in a way that has as little negative impact on our environment as possible.
I like to put a little creative twist on things so that they become more fun to use. We’re more likely to use things that are fun and beautiful! People who know Unfiltered Skin Care always recognize the branding right away. It’s clean, bright, simple. My formal background is in Interior Design so it’s important to me that things look a certain way. The way something looks informs how you interact with it, and signifies a certain set of values. For Unfiltered Skin Care, clear packaging signifies that this product is clean, it’s pure. The top-notch organic ingredients don’t need to hide behind anything. Minimal glass packaging tells the world that we care about sustainability. It’s also important to me that things not feel to ‘gendered’ or like they’re only for a certain age bracket. Inclusivity is really important! I want everyone to feel like they can be a part of the healthy skincare movement!
What were you like growing up?
I was a quirky kid that grew into a quirky adult. I’ve learned to really appreciate my uniqueness. I had a good group of friends but I also really liked being on my own. I went through a big ‘witch’/magic phase. I dressed up as a witch every single Halloween. Witches were fascinating and powerful. They could concoct potions and spells for whatever they desired. My poor parents – I spent a lot of time whipping up potions in the kitchen and making huge messes!
I also liked to bake, paint, make collages, play piano, and dance was life! Basically, if there was something creative to do, I was all about it. At summer camp, we could choose from different activities like different sports, swimming, etc. I spent the majority of time in the art tent.
