Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobbi Petersen
Hi Bobbi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Photography has always been a part of my life. I was the yearbook photographer in high school and freelanced throughout college while earning my degree in criminal justice and psychology. What started as a creative outlet quickly turned into a passion and, eventually, a thriving career.
At one point, I co-owned a successful photography studio but ultimately chose to step away to pursue my own vision and start fresh. That decision led me to establish Bobbi Petersen Photography, where I’ve built a business that reflects my artistic style and unique approach. Clients come to me not only for my vision but also for the one-of-a-kind experience my property offers.
Providing the absolute best customer service and delivering an exceptional client experience are the foundations of my business. I intentionally limit the number of sessions I take on and carefully plan the timing of each shoot to ensure my clients receive my full attention and the best possible results. My property, with its stunning natural beauty and carefully curated features, is a cornerstone of the experience I provide. Clients know they’ll have access to a space that is entirely unique—whether it’s the sunset over the 35-acre landscape, the serene boardwalk, or the charming indoor and outdoor greenhouse spaces.
This curated approach allows me to focus on creating a luxury brand where my clients feel valued and know they are receiving an exclusive experience that can’t be replicated. My goal is to ensure that their journey with me is as meaningful and memorable as the images I create—capturing their story through the lens of my vision in a setting that’s as beautiful and distinctive as the moments we preserve together.
This year, we also launched Guilded Grey Events, an elopement and micro-wedding business. Our climate-controlled greenhouse has become the perfect location for hosting intimate gatherings. With its lush greenery, antique charm, and year-round comfort, it provides a magical, nature-inspired setting for couples who want a memorable and elegant experience without the stress of a large wedding. The greenhouse is thoughtfully designed to accommodate everything from romantic ceremonies to small celebrations, creating a one-of-a-kind backdrop for special moments.
I also created a separate business for my commercial clients: Photography for Lawyers. This venture ties into another of my side roles—serving as the Executive Director for the Wisconsin Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. This connection has allowed me to merge my photography skills with my understanding of the legal profession, offering tailored services for attorneys and law firms.
Along the way, I’ve also ventured into mentoring other photographers and managing Guilded Grey Jewelry. Balancing these projects has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. My journey is one of perseverance, learning, and staying true to what inspires me most—creating meaningful work that brings joy to others.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but I believe the challenges I’ve faced have shaped me into the business owner and artist I am today. One of the biggest struggles was leaving a successful photography studio I co-owned. It was a difficult decision, filled with uncertainty, but it ultimately allowed me to pursue my own vision and build a business that aligns with my values and creativity.
Another challenge was navigating a period of intense personal stress and health issues that took a toll on my body and mind. Learning how to manage stress and prioritize self-care was a major turning point for me, and it helped me rebuild not only my health but also my confidence in handling the demands of running multiple businesses.
Starting over also came with its own set of obstacles—establishing my brand, building a client base, and maintaining a luxury-level experience while ensuring financial stability. I’ve had to carefully balance creativity with the realities of running a business, and every misstep has been a lesson in resilience and growth.
Despite these challenges, each struggle has taught me something valuable, whether it’s the importance of trusting my instincts, setting boundaries, or staying true to my vision. The road hasn’t always been easy, but I wouldn’t change a thing, as it’s led me to where I am today—a place where I can genuinely say I love what I do and the life I’ve created around it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a fine art photographer specializing in weddings, portraits, and commercial work. My focus is on creating authentic, timeless images that capture real emotion and connection. I’m known for my warm, natural style, attention to detail, and my ability to make clients feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. My work is deeply influenced by the beauty of my 35-acre property in Madison, Wisconsin, which provides a private and stunning backdrop for my sessions.
What I’m most proud of is the experience I’ve built for my clients. From the moment they book a session to the delivery of their final images, every aspect is designed to reflect the high level of care and professionalism that I bring to my work. My property is exclusive to my clients, offering features like a boardwalk, greenhouse, nature paths, and breathtaking sunsets—making their sessions truly one-of-a-kind.
What sets me apart is the combination of my artistic vision and the environment I’ve cultivated. Clients come to me because they trust my creative eye and are drawn to the unique beauty of my location. I’m also selective about how I structure my business, ensuring that every session is thoughtfully planned and executed to maintain a luxury, boutique experience.
I’m proud to say that my work goes beyond taking beautiful photographs—it’s about creating meaningful, lasting memories for my clients while providing them with an exceptional experience they’ll never forget. That focus on both artistry and client care is what truly sets me apart.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I can’t stress enough the importance of learning the business side of photography. It’s not just about taking great pictures—it’s about running a sustainable business. Understand pricing, contracts, marketing, and client communication.
Managing finances is one of the most crucial aspects of building a successful photography business. It starts with knowing your numbers—understanding your costs, both fixed and variable, and ensuring your pricing reflects not just your expenses but also the value of your time and skill.
Budgeting is another critical component. Having a clear picture of your income and expenses allows you to plan for slow seasons, invest in necessary equipment, and set aside funds for taxes. Pay your taxes and bills on time, and don’t spend more than you make. It’s not complex, but many people fall into the trap of overspending, which can quickly derail a business.
