Today we’d like to introduce you to Bining Xu.
Hi Bining, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hi, like many lighting designers, I started my career by getting the opportunity to work on an event. During my second semester of graduate school, I was invited to be the lead lighting designer for an event at Terminal 5, one of New York City’s high-profile venues. It was an incredible opportunity. Following that event, I gradually began exploring the industry further. I am currently working as a freelance lighting designer with Kawa Lighting, primarily focusing on different nightclubs
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No road is ever completely smooth, especially when it comes to a career path. As an international lighting designer, I must admit that the stress of work and frequent travel across different countries can be challenging at times. I’ve also faced the anxiety and fears that all artists could experience throughout their careers.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a concert lighting designer specializing in lighting design for festivals and concerts. My work primarily involves drafting, previsualization rendering, programming, and operating. With a background that bridges literature and live entertainment production, I have a strong interest in utilizing Unreal Engine for storytelling, creating mash-ups between lighting previsualization and video games. Beyond my regular work, I also dive in video game development. By using game engines, previsualization can provide audiences with a more immersive experience while also exploring innovations in gameplay.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Talking about LA? My favorite thing has to be the warm winters, especially compared to New York. But honestly, I’m not a great driver at all.
