Today we’d like to introduce you to Bibi Sanchez
Hi Bibi, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into the entertainment world kicked off when I was a 9 year old girl and saw The Lion King on Broadway. It completely blew me away and sparked my love for musical theater. I couldn’t stop talking about how it made me feel, and I knew I wanted to learn everything about it so I could do the same one day. Unfortunately, back home, in a Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz a tiny town in Mexico, I could only take dance classes- since acting and singing lessons were out of reach.
I wanted to come to New York, but my dad insisted I finish a “normal” degree first. So, at 18, I moved to Mexico City to study Marketing during the day and squeeze in singing, acting, and dancing classes in the afternoons.
My Marketing journey eventually took me to the UK for a Master’s degree. I tried to fit in as much performing arts as I could during that time. After five years, I proudly showed my dad my degrees, and finally moved to New York.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In this city, each day brings new challenges, pushing me to explore the depths of my artistry in ways I never thought possible. I find myself embracing the beauty of uncertainty… I know it sounds very weird and rather romantic, but there’s pure beauty behind embracing the uncertainty of when or how you will book the next thing, and if that is going to be an important step to get you where you wanna be.
Uncertainty is the biggest challenge I face as an actress and an immigrant. Sometimes, I find myself wondering if I’m truly doing everything I can to achieve my dreams and if it was worth leaving my career in Mexico to seek a space in New York. Yet, every time I look around and see the community and the passion with which art is created and valued here, I feel a sense of belonging. That energy reminds me that I am on the right path and that my dreams are indeed within reach.
Whenever I find myself doubting, I remind myself that I’ve longed to be here for years. The growth and lessons I’ve experienced along the way bring me a sense of relief. The true beauty lies in trusting yourself enough to take the biggest risks on your own potential.
Persistence is key. Sounds very mainstream, but never ever give up on your dreams. Don’t ignore your callings, don’t ignore the desires of your heart, go for it. Don’t listen to the people who insist that you can’t, nor get discouraged by rejection, it’s going to be hard, but everything is doable. Networking is crucial too; build relationships and seek mentors who can guide you. Be humble to learn in every single step of your career, and when you are given an opportunity, work hard and be grateful. But, most importantly, stay true to yourself and your roots. Your unique background is your strength.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a proud Mexican actress, dancer, and singer. My credits in NYC include Off-Broadway “Barba: A Brazilian Body Percussion Musical” at Pregones PRTT, and dancing for Univision Upfront 2024. I’ve also performed in original plays like Stay by Andrea Azomoza in The Vino Theatre and the reading of How to Not Unlive Yourself by Rula A. Muñoz at La MaMa. Additionally, I’ve performed in various cabarets at Don’t Tell Mama and Green Room 42.
Recently, I’ve been collaborating with “Something From Abroad,” a theater company created by Mexicans, where I performed Spanish songs at St. Marks Theatre in partnership with Frigid New York.
In Mexico, my theater credits include Grease, Legally Blonde, The Rocky Horror Show, and Little Shop of Horrors.
On the side I do remote marketing for a Mexican firm.
What matters most to you? Why?
To me, Art without a purpose means nothing. I try to make sure that through my work, I can give back a little of the magic that theatre has given me.
Nowadays I teach dance class to kids, and also I am part of Wincey Co. Theatre Company, where I contribute to educating kids in Queens, Brooklyn, and New Jersey through art and musical theater shows, guided by Wincey Terry Bryant, the Arts Director of the New Jersey Coalition against Human Trafficking.
Moreover, I volunteer for R.Evolución Latina Arts Camp, The D2GB Children’s Performing Arts Camp offers a unique opportunity for children ages 7-17 to explore the world of performing arts. This program brings together professional teaching artists from Broadway and beyond. Throughout this summer FREE week-long camp I help taking care of the kids and making sure they are safe.
One of my latest project was actually a Gala for PACT (Protect All Children from Trafficking) in Midtown Manhattan, in which I performed an excerpt of the original musical Barba. We did body percussion and had so much fun. Thanks to Luis Salgado the director of the production, Carlos Bauzys the composer and Kim Bixler for the book and lyrics. And of course Frances Tirado for the invitation to this Gala.
I mentioned this in a past interview with Canvas Rebel. As a Latina, I take great pride in my cultural heritage and the richness it brings to my artistry. Recently, I also produced a successful cabaret through my nonprofit initiative, Muy Muy Productions. Our mission is to promote arts education and provide platforms for diverse artists to showcase their talents. I’m thrilled about our upcoming plans to produce more showcases, offering opportunities for international artists to shine on stage.
