Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Kamba-Nyathi.
Hi Barbara, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After my cervical cancer diagnosis in 2009, I am only realising it in retrospect, I went into survival mode and my life became all about my making it to the next moment. From the time of diagnosis up to now, I have been through some of the craziest experiences, both physically and emotionally. I had 14 surgical operations (2009-2018), I was deaf for 9 months in 2012, I started running marathons to prove to the world, to myself and most importantly to my then husband that I was still ‘normal’. Of course this was self destruction of the highest order, how could I be so unkind to my already struggling body, but back then it was important that I was seen as ‘normal’. Also in 2012 after an MRI scan I found out I had a swollen gland in my brain; fast forward to 2015, my marriage started crumbling when I discovered the multiple affairs my ex was having, health wise I was also getting worse until the only choice that made perfect sense to me was to have a hysterectomy. So in 2016 I began prepping myself emotionally and mentally for the hysterectomy, I also spoke to my tribe because I was gonna need their support and love. In August my mother passed away; such a huge blow to me and my wellbeing, in October of the same year I finally had my hysterectomy. During this time my marriage had become as unbearable as the post hysterectomy pains, my grief was also showing up in a huge way. I finally got divorced in 2017 but the emotional pains were as raw as they could be. To top it all, I live with arthritic autoimmune disease which translates to a life time of background pains as I go through all the other health challenges. I went for therapy, I wrote books, I spoke, about my anger, pain, and trauma in all their forms and eventually began healing, and most essentially learnt that my healing is not a once off event but it will take a life time and stages, hence the need to be intentional about it.
All these lived experiences of mine inspired me to establish Bold Dialogue in 2019, an intuitive wellness platform that facilitates healing, ignites hope and brings the possibility of boldly living a life that honours your passions and dreams. We work with women across Africa, equipping them with the support, mentorship and tools required to transcend trauma in order to truly operate from a place of excellence. Because we recognize the power of community in our culture, we intentionally engage men in our work. We lead heart-to-heart conversations that pave the way for emotional and mental healing because empowered men, empower the women in their lives.
Our culturally-informed offerings range from curated immersive nature and spiritual experiences, workshops and masterclasses, to coaching and eclectic psychotherapy to help people unleash the power of redefining and rebuilding their identities on their own therms through eclectic generational and inner child trauma healing. We also publish a monthly magazine that reaches readers across the globe.
Whether we’re in the village coaching our young leaders, or facilitating a virtual corporate training, our mission remains the same: To serve through healing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life wouldn’t be life without the occasional bumps and humps along the way. For me the biggest one has been navigating my health challenges and working at establishing Bold Dialogue as a brand and authority. Also living through the Covid pandemic meant going back to the drawing board and redefining how we work and where. The blessing from all this is that we decided to offer virtual services and this is coming in handy as I learn to live with my new heart condition. One would think there is nothing left in my body to plague, but these diseases seem to find new organs to attack.
The internet is the most crucial investment in the day to day operations for Bold Dialogue.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
