Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Flowers
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began sewing when I was 13 years old. I realized at an early age I had a love of fashion. I began making clothes for myself because I loved wearing something no one else had. It started as a hobby, a simple love of the ability to express myself and lose myself in art, Business wasn’t the goal, I didn’t originally think I had what it took to make clothes for others let alone run a company.
It has been an incredible amount of work but today I literally just picked up part of my first delivered manufactured goods, my online store is almost open, and I have been in fashion shows from Seattle to London to New York, and I have been featured in close to a dozen magazines (including Harpers Bazaar and Hollywood Elites).
I have built a local team of designers, models, ambassadors, photographers, videographers, and social media managers, singers, dancers and musicians who all want to either work for/with me or who want to collaborate in some way.
To top it off, several months ago I finally believed in myself and my community enough to ask my husband quit the soulless job he felt stuck in to come full time help me. He is now my business manager, doing everything from building my website and store, integrating Shopify, communicating with the factories, to ordering boxes business cards and shipping labels and everything else.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Building a business is a huge undertaking. Even if everything is going smooth it is a massive feat. As far as struggles go, there never seems to be enough time or money at the beginning.
Everything involved in starting a business is expensive. The growing pains are real.
It was also a struggle fabric sourcing and finding manufacturing. There are very few fabric suppliers in the Seattle area and no one wanted to deal with the technical intricacies of my work. I had to really search to find the right help and I put in a lot of hours doing it myself in the meantime.
I went from working nearly 100 hours a week, staying up past midnight many nights to now having hired a team to help me with my socials, tech development and fabrication.
Whether its money or time or both, (it is always both) you have to put so much in before you see anything come back. It really comes down to believing that it will all pan out in the end and having those around you that support and believe in you too.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in wearable art. I love making things bordering on fantasy, taboo or out of the ordinary. But mostly l love when I create something that makes the wearer embody both their inner child and their sophisticated self at the same time. The feeling that they didn’t even know they needed it until they saw themselves in it. A come to life, I’ve never felt so good in something moment.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m pretty much an open book honestly. I feel most people who know me know my past and what I’m about today.
