Today we’d like to introduce you to Ann Huston
Hi Ann, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
A fun and challenging interview. Thankyou Bold Journey for asking about my story. I write this as a non-writer but as a visual artist by nature, since childhood. Here is a small reflection of part of my journey.
I call Northern New Mexico my home and have shown my arts in the New Mexico galleries starting in the mid-eighties.
For many years, I also worked as a weaver and dyer, a textile artist as well. My weaving experience brought me to New Mexico to study and work at a young age.
My paintings are in response to the high desert light and landscape steeped in history and mystery among the adobes and churches. Beauty, intrigue and inspiration are just out the door.
I have witnessed a lot of shifts and changes being of the 50’s generation. At warp speed, it feels like we had just started out with black and white TV, on to computers, cell phones, social media and AI. My generation has learned the skill of adapting and processing quickly! All are good attributes for being an artist in these current times, building resilience and perseverance.
Having grown up in an artists’ family, my childhood entertainment wasn’t so much the black and white TV, but in a room called the ‘library’. On the shelves were every kind of paper, pencils, paint. pens and ink, all the art supplies imaginable. I was naturally comfortable being on my own, creating, with my imagination swirling. Time would fly by.
Years later, here I am, and when at my easel, I tap into the library, metaphorically. The time flies by or maybe it stops, when painting, I’m not sure!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The obstacles and challenges are real being a working artist. In the big picture though, there are always opportunities to be found or presented. I often remind myself to keep faith. I view faith as tangible.
In hindsight, my story diverts to the scenic route, taking the long way around. Sometimes I feel like Forest Gump, a witness to many life-changing events; being in the right place at the wrong time and vice versa or is it the box of chocolates, you just don’t know what you get. Or, is it really being at the right place at the right time all the time. Something I can relate to.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My medium is soft pastel on artists’ sandpaper. using all archival materials and finished with museum glass. I’m grateful to have received some recognition along the way , known for a unique style and approach. For me, the more artists the better, making the world a better place. Being an abstract thinker can be freeing.
I invite you to visit my website annhustonstudio.com for more pieces of ‘my story’ and to view my paintings.
What are your plans for the future?
In moving forward, I will continue building my inventory and stay in appreciation for my continued opportunities as an artist.
