Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Fallon
Hi Ana, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I would be happy to. My initial introduction to photography was as a college elective. It was a black and white photography class where we learned how to develop our own film and prints in the darkroom. While I was in college my aunt encouraged me to try modeling. I was fortunate enough to do so for about 10 years and traveled and worked in Japan, Germany, Los Angeles and Austria. During my time as a model I was able to ask the photographers many questions and learned quite a bit from them. I practiced snapping portraits of fellow models, family members, pets and shot lots of landscapes. Eventually I quit modeling and with my husband’s encouragement, I started my photography business.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am a “glass is half full” person and I always strive to stay positive but there have definitely been times when my patience has been tried. As a mother and wife, I struggle with balancing my personal life with my professional one.
I want to be there for my kids and make sure they have what they need whether it’s for school, sports or hanging out with their friends. I also want to make sure that I have the energy, focus and bandwidth to deliver to my clients. I have had to turn down a few portrait sessions due to time constraints and schedule conflicts. It’s not something I like to do often but I am also realistic. I would never want to take a project on unless I know I will give them 100% of my attention.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I would say the bulk of my work and what I’m known for has mainly been family portraits, senior headshots, etc. I take great pride in helping my clients feel comfortable in front of my lens and providing them with direction when needed as well as encouragement. Having spent time in front of a camera as a model has really helped with putting my subjects at ease. Getting your client to relax and feel good about themselves is important for capturing those candid and real moments. I’ve also been asked to do food photography, restaurants, cookbooks, business headshots, jewelry designers and yoga studios/instructors. I like to challenge myself and learn new genres of photography. When a friend asked me to shoot all the photos for his restaurant along with the dishes, I was excited to meet the challenge. Landscapes are a personal favorite of mine. I have complete artistic freedom since they are not commissioned like the previous genres mentioned. It’s a great feeling when you have an image that you have created all on your own and someone appreciates it enough to purchase and place in their home.
What are your plans for the future?
One dream I’ve always had is to have my own exhibition. Since moving back to my native California, I’ve been inspired by the central coast and have slowly started the process of curating some images. Stay tuned!
