Today we’d like to introduce you to Adeline-julie Bee
Hi Adeline-julie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Coming from a family of artists, I have been surrounded since my earliest childhood by the canvases of my great-grandfather, the sculptures of a great-uncle, and the surrealist paintings of my great-aunt. This closeness to art objects foretold my passion and the path to take in the world. When I was little, I loved painting and drawing. Understanding what a line, light, depth, perspective, mass, empty and full space, layout, concept, or the process of an artistic approach was gradually revealed to me during my various art training courses. So, through constant confrontation with it, I considered the frame, the panel, the subject, the cut or amputated image, the visible and the invisible, the material and textures, the colours and techniques. I reproduced, represented, copied, created. Throughout this journey, I heard people say that I was or was not creative, and the impression of never being creative enough in my field overwhelmed me, pointing to the mystery that would occupy me again and again.
Travel plays a significant role in my life. As an artist, I have always been amazed by the power to create, transform, and interpret the world. I also have always loved teaching and learning. I can firmly say that these are the pillars of a true passion.
After earning a degree in comic strip art from the Institut Saint-Luc in Brussels and a diploma in editing-script in the field of audiovisual broadcasting, I earned a degree in textile design at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de la Cambre. Finally, to connect my various training courses, I obtained my teaching qualification.
I worked in the audiovisual field for nearly twenty years as a script supervisor, while also being committed to parallel activities such as teaching art, developing a place for teaching textile techniques, creating a television channel with three other creatives, and developing my complementary activity as an artist.
After abandoning my brushes, pencils, and paints for about twenty years, I had a breakthrough during a simple conversation with an acquaintance and thought to myself: it’s time to pursue your passion and stop avoiding it.
Since October 2019, day after day, I have been building what has been the richest, most fulfilling thing I have ever experienced—my corner of paradise, my artistic enterprise.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has been filled with doubts and questioning. It has gone through tests, failures, mistakes, detours, devaluations, and of course, answers, encouragements, and successes. It is my ability to respond to difficulties that makes me think that, more or less, it is the missteps that have shaped me rather than the other way around. Indeed, if it hadn’t been chaotic, would my path have taught me to adapt and bounce back from the obstacles life has thrown at me?
The most difficult part was believing in my talents and my form of expression, as well as finding it. I studied a multitude of artistic mediums, whether it was music, theater, storytelling, dance, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, … before finding how I liked to express myself. This search took me about thirty years. Once I found my medium, I had to confront it, learn, bounce back, and discover. It is, in fact, a perpetual quest and, I think, a lifelong one.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an artist, teacher and nature enthusiast, specialising in watercolour. Drawing on the enchanting palette of the Belgian Ardennes, I search for ingredients for my inks and watercolours. The profound beauty of nature fuels my art, expressing the admiration and wonder I have for it through my homemade colours. Recently, I’ve ventured into surface design, translating my watercolours into captivating patterns.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
II have been fortunate in my professional career, with incredible encounters that propelled me forward. Chance events led me down a different path than the one I had imagined, which, in my case, allowed me to live my passion while having financial security. But I also think that, in fact, there is no real chance. I feel like I brought these “opportunities” into my life through hard work, determination, and curiosity.
