In our experience, talking about legacy is often subtly discouraged by society and we find this to be deeply unfortunate. Thinking about the legacy you would like to build can help you better align your work, life, time – your sweat and tears – with your values. Below, we’ve tried to create a space for folks to start conversations about they legacies they are hoping to build.

Gui: Our goal at Unfiltered is to make experience better in the hospitality industry. That goes for our clients, their employees, and their guests. As hospitality veterans we’ve seen the toll that caring for others can take on each of us. By taking the time to address things that can cause the most trouble (lack of tools, lack of education, lack of consistency) we hope to move the hospitality industry in a more sustainable and healthy direction. My hope is that I leave the world cleaner and greener for my children and grandchildren. Our company was founded by my father with a similar goal, and he passed that vision on to me. We hope that by advocating and developing solutions for a zero-waste culture, that we can reduce the amount of waste humanity will leave behind. Read more>>

As I near my upcoming 35th birthday this December, the notion of creating a legacy continues to grow stronger in my mind. While many people hope to leave a legacy through the lives of their children, or their philanthropic work resulting in their name being carved into a building, it is my greatest hope that my legacy will be something far less tangible, but much more impactful. Zara and Jenny

Jenny: We want to leave behind physical symbols of love – be it self-love, love for our world, or love between humans. Zara: I imagine a young woman who buys, say, a ring, then grows older and hands it down to her daughter or grandson. Then for that grandson, the symbol of that cherished ring would be first and foremost – about his grandmother’s love for him. And that reminder will live on. Read more>>

As an instigator of change in the toy and game industry: in the materials used to make products and in bridging the gap between traditional boys and girls toys. After growing frustrated with the greenwashing in the toy and game industry, and how bio-plastic still contains plastic, Julian and I set out to work with eco-friendly materials already available, most of which are made from plants. Before we launched Ebony Tomatoes Collective, the entire team sat down and discussed what we wanted our impact to be. For me, the most impactful takeaway from that meeting was the idea of preserving stories. I hear a lot of advice to tell and share stories in creative spaces, which is fine and good, but preserving stories is equally if not more important. Telling stories has always been a part of the black community — in this sense, what we do at Ebony Tomatoes is very much in line with our ancestral traditions. Read more>>

I hope through my story others can learn that art can serve a greater purpose. By serving, volunteering, and donating your craft and your time can make such a difference.
