We were lucky to catch up with Darren Fishman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Darren, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Well my biggest risk was deciding to move to the US from Australia. I had visited Palm Springs often as have always been infatuated with retro culture, be that movies, music, television, fashion, graphic design, interiors and architecture. So with Palm Springs being the mecca for mid century I definitely resonated with the vibe of the area. So made the move and set myself up doing what I love… being creative and developing brands, graphics and websites for businesses, as well as designing fabulous retro-inspired interiors for both private homes and vacation rentals across the Coachella Valley and as far as the coast such as Los Angeles.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I worked in advertising and marketing back in Australia for quite a few years and then brought that experience to the desert by starting a creative agency called Desert Society which caters to the whole SoCal area, but we even have nationwide clients. The name reflects both the “desert” areas and major city “society” we love to bring our expertise to.
Desert Society is all about generating creativity because we’re as passionate about developing memorable brands, captivating designs, engaging moments and alluring environments as we are about the desert and its surrounding areas.
It’s really our decades of experience in the spheres of advertising and marketing, luxury retail and fashion, music and hospitality, as well as interior design and renovation that make us a true one-stop shop for the most innovative and effective creative outcomes.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Simply through the quality of our work. We take great pride in what we do, and will not let anything lackluster out the door. So sometimes that makes us a little head strong perhaps as far as pushing and selling to the client the ideas we have developed, but it ensures everything is true to the vision of the brief, and subsequently something we can proudly stand behind,
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
As simple as it sounds, the most effective strategy is be nice to everyone and do great work! Let the market be your greatest advertising tool by having people on board who will supply excellent testimonials, referrals and word of mouth. People trust the recommendations or their own associates considerably more than any paid advertising you can do. That’s why, reputation is everything.
