Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Beyonca Goodson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Beyonca, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
As a young girl I was always involved in artistic activities. I danced (with schools/dance companies) from the age of four to the age of twenty. I sang on church choir and school choir. I participated in beauty pageants. I did a lot of drawing and painting as a kid and I still do as an adult. I feel that my involvement with the arts as a child ultimately led me to an artistic profession.
Specifically, my involvement in dance, pageants, and cheerleading introduced me to the world of glamour and beauty, ever since I’ve had a passion and love for makeup. I never knew I would turn makeup into a profession, but I did know that if you love something as much as I love makeup, you have to incorporate that in your everyday life, in some way. My way was turning my love for makeup into a professional beauty brand and service.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I discovered makeup at the age of five and by the age of ten I was already playing in makeup products. I started learning makeup techniques in high school by watching tutorials online. By the time I went off to college, I was wearing a full face of makeup to events/college parties. People would come up to me and say: “Your makeup looks really good! Can you do mine?” So that’s when I began taking my first clients back in 2019.
Now, I have serviced over 500 clients in the local area. That number is expanding more and more each day and I believe that what keeps my business thriving is my professionalism and the experience I give my clients when I service. I provide drinks, snacks, and I treat them so special. I get so much feedback from clients that lets me know that they really enjoy booking with me simply because of how well I treat them. I also offer a variety of makeup services for different client preferences. The services that I offer are all makeup application services which include: Half-Face Glam, Natural/Soft Glam, Full Glam, Creative Glam, Photoshoot Glam, Bridal/Wedding Glam, Group Glam, and Travel services. In the future, I want to expand my brand even more by adding more services, like facials and individual eyelash extensions. I’m also currently working on releasing a cosmetics line featuring my very own makeup products.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In the beginning, starting my business was very hard. I’m sure every small business owner can agree that in the beginning, you have to build everything from the ground up. I ran into a lot of clients cancelling their appointments with me, I didn’t have much of a portfolio to promote to gain clients, and I had to fund my entire makeup kit and brand with little to no money. It was really hard and there were plenty of times where I wanted to give up. It only took one very loyal client of mine to stick with me in the beginning that pushed me to keep going. With that, I knew that someone other than myself believed in me and my business so it motivated me to give it my all. From then, business has been up and I’m thankful for how far I’ve come.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes. I wish I knew about small business funding and loan resources. Mostly, I funded my business all on my own, so it wasn’t completely impossible but I think it would have been really helpful to have that funding come from somewhere else so that I could’ve made more of a profit in the beginning.
Other than that, I think I used a lot of the resources that were right in front of me. Although I am self-taught I did train under Milly Made Me Makeup Artistry, based in Atlanta, GA. This training was to improve and enhance makeup techniques. I also networked my way into my first makeup studio located in Columbia, SC.
