We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Adwoa Duncan-Williams. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Adwoa below.
Hi Adwoa , thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Starting my career as an actor was one of the biggest risk I’ve taken thus far. Packing up, moving from everything I know and was comfortable with to pursue this dream was something I knew I had to risk. It was vital I took the risk to move to New York to become an actor because of the grind of the city. It was what I needed to jolt myself into the industry properly
Adwoa , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I studied acting as an associate degree before I actually dove into the industry. It was important I took this step because I didn’t know as much as I thought I did in relation to film and tv acting. In addition the business side of it, which is equally, if not more important to learn in the early stages of finding your feet. I’m proud that I was able to do this by myself, but in addition as someone who is not from New York. I want people to know that I come from humble beginnings, I had to fight every stage of my journey- but it’s what has made me want this career even more. Acting is not for the faint hearted, it’s a professional that will always challenge you in the best way
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Just staying present in the journey. It’s never ending. My stories are still writing themselves. I would say one that sticks out for me is when I graduated film and tv school and having to now figure out the correct way to venture into the industry. It wasn’t an easy task, because there was still steps I had to take to even get my starter pack as an actor. But there was a turning point during Covid where the auditions were coming through and I started to book super meaningful work.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the craft of acting. What I thought it was once I started full time studying. It wasn’t what I thought it was, nor was it as easy as I thought it would be. I was supposed to be challenged non stop. I was suppose to discover, break down and analysis the craft in a way that made me really dig deep. And I never knew that before I started training properly
