We were lucky to catch up with Chandler Powell, Cooper Powell, Caleb Ayers, Camden Skidmore recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Chandler Powell, Cooper Powell, Caleb Ayers, Camden Skidmore thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Every project we take on has a meaningful message and story. Our first album “Remember When” dealt with a lot of emotions we were dealing with at the time which made the album sad. We ended up removing this project because of the production quality but you can find the single “Otherside” still out there.
Our second album “A Different View” was a complete flip as far as mood, production, and songwriting. With all ouf the sad, angry, and depressing music that is pushed in the mainstream, we wanted to make a positive album. We felt like it’s what people needed to hear instead of the usual toxic behavior found in songs today.
Currently we are working on our 3rd Studio project which will be a concept album. This album is filled with double meanings that connects the story world and the real world. Not to give away too much but it follows a character dealing with the temptations of cultural norms while the world is collapsing around him. In the midst of all this he struggles to figure out if the one person he cares about the most has come back to see him as the country is collapsing.
Long story short, we like to make meaningful art!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Three Years Apart formed as a band in 2019. Created by founding member Chandler Powell, the band began to form their unique sound of alt/pop and traditional rock-n-roll. Later that year, with his smooth rock and blues style, Cooper Powell became the new bass player of 3YA. In the summer of 2020, Camden Skidmore joined as the new lead guitarist bringing a new sound and energy to the band. 3YA embarked on their journey with producer Will Snyder to create a rock-n-roll record. In 2022, A Different View was released, and a new sound of rock music has begun. The final piece of the puzzle was found in mid 2023 when Caleb Ayers joined the band on Drums.
We are proud of the progress we have made and perseverance we have had over the past 4 years. Losing members and having to build team chemistry is always hard, especially in music. The love for creating is what keeps the band going. Being able to tell stories has always been our inspiration and we are hoping to combine that with film during our next project! What sets us a part from others is the fact that we have yet to find another band that sounds like us. We don’t know what genre we “fit” into and although some would say that’s not good, we take pride in that. Our goals are still ahead of us and we won’t be satisfied until we get as close as we can to them.
Welcome to the world of THREE YEARS APART!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The goal for us is to do what we love for a living. We all work normal jobs which we enjoy but our passion lies in music and being able to tell stories and express feelings that others could relate to. What drives us is doing what we want with the one life we have.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
We believe everyone is creative in some way, but what we would say to someone who doesn’t understand is this. Life is way to short to not try. We’ve never had anyone tell us directly but you hear it more often than none that “you can’t have a career in music, theirs millions of people trying.” That is true but at the end of the day getting to write and create music is one of the most fulfilling things you can do as an artist.
“What makes me uninspired is seeing people wake up day after day to the same routine schedule, only to look forward to the weekend not enjoying the moment and always looking forward to a better time in life. Eventually you’ll have nothing to look forward to.” -Chandler Powell of Three Years Apart.
