We were lucky to catch up with Ben G. Bronson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ben G., thanks for joining us today. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
In the wild, wild world of digital content or anything media-related, one thing people have to keep in mind is that there is usually someone out there willing to do it for free (usually badly, it’s like rolling a dice baby!). This often results in low quality and, of course, zero accountability. You get what you pay for, folks! Also, in today’s interconnected world, you are up against people from around the world who have lower costs of living. They actually don’t always charge that much less. However, even a 10% discount can get someone’s attention. There is always someone somewhere willing to undercut you.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the media at the age of 16. What kicked things off was recording music with a drunken chain-smoking replacement bass player from a one hit wonder band in Canada. Up there, things are very cliquey and I was a true outsider. No labels would sign me so I co-founded my own with a business partner Blu Velvet aka Laura. We competed with a lot of bigger labels and stole the spotlight quite often. By the time I turned 22, I was earning thousands of dollars in royalties and had two YouTube hits, including “Ben G. Light My Way,” which you can still find on YouTube, although my channel has been taken down.
Unfortunately, things were not viable long term for me (due to the industry’s favoritism), and constant attempts to silence me. While there was a brief comeback with my band, The Modern Fever, earning a #1 hit on 60 radio stations across the country, it didn’t lead to the opportunities I deserved, so I looked elsewhere.
I rebranded from music to business and tech and also started sharing my branding and PR expertise with people in a variety of industries. I’ve worked with contributors to Forbes, (larger) Influencers, Ted Talk speakers, Doctors, and high level government employees.
Even accomplished people sometimes find themselves in asymmetrical markets where the odds are stacked against them. This happens most often if they are branching off in a new direction, or changing from a collaborator to a leader in certain types of projects. With coaching, customized plans, and of course media assets and public endorsements, I help people achieve more! I’ve had my hand in approximately 14 best selling books in 2023, there are other projects completed and in the works, but I have to keep some of them a mystery… for now.
One thing I’m proud of is treating my social media accounts like media outlets and starting my own small, but effective media network that includes proprietary publications, but also some strategic partners.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Indeed, I had the privilege of connecting with one of my collaborators the accomplished Crystal Manning, who is not only an athlete and entrepreneur but also an award-winning filmmaker. She found me through Instagram, when one of my posts was trending. It was an experimental post that one of my close friends pushed me into making, it wasn’t originally content I was going to share on that platform. Crystal noticed it, reached out, and subsequently introduced me to a team she had assembled during the pandemic.
Our collaboration yielded an exceptional project that I’m eagerly anticipating the launch of.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Starting young and being focused on doing quality work and developing not just a reputation but a portfolio. The burden of proof is always on you! So collect as much evidence as you can.
