We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carolina Zapata. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Carolina below.
Hi Carolina, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
Of course, the music industry, especially songwriting. can give off the impression of being highly profitable, but it often isn’t. The biggest challenge for profitability in the songwriting industry is how we get paid through streaming platforms and other sources. These platforms usually pay us a tiny fraction of a cent, and that small amount is also divided into a certain percentage for anyone involved in the writing process. On top of that, many up-and-coming songwriters end up with unfavorable deals that affect their ability to make a steady income
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
To be honest, I did not know songwriting could be an actual job but that being said, I became interested in the songwriting industry during my senior year of high school when I wrote a song for a music class. I guess my teacher recognized my potential and encouraged me to go to a college to study songwriting. After that, I went to school, met cool up-and-coming songwriters, signed songwriters, and started working with them as an independent writer.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
being able to convert mine or others thoughts, emotions, and experiences into meaningful expressions. It’s also rewarding to know that the art I create allows people to communicate and connect with others.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
yeah, I think a lot of people may struggle to fully grasp the understanding of the depth of emotional investment and vulnerability involved during the creative process. Creating songs sometimes means exposing personal feelings or experiences. Don’t get me wrong, there are also a lot of fun days creating other types of songs.
