We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Natalia Winovich. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Natalia below.
Natalia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful endeavors are those in which I feel aligned with my purpose. Freeing myself from expectations, being bold with the brush strokes, playing on the emerging shapes and painting in my own interpretations. A curious exploration rather than a scripted performance.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For as long as I can remember, I was drawn to nature, and creating art. Painting, sculpting, weaving and drawing provided channels for me to record my observations and express my deepest affinity for nature. My process usually starts at a location, where I can indulge in an intimate moment of witness. The light cutting through the thick of the redwood grove and spreading its life giving warmth to the rich ferns on the forest floor. The harmonious color transformations and contrasts in the sun-setting skies. Rather than focusing on depicting every detail in the landscape, I capture the spirit of that moment, the moment of witness, and the moment of feeling like I belong. I strive to capture that very feeling and aspire to transcend this wholesome emotion to the viewer, and to ignite an affinity for nature and art making in other’s search of their belonging.
Born and raised in an architecturally abundant small town, nestled in one of the most scenic regions of central Europe, I grew up inspired by the surrounding beauty. As a second out of four children born to a school teacher mother and a political journalist turned arborist father, I spent my childhood climbing trees, roaming through the woods, learning to forage, chasing lizards and collecting bugs. I am now residing in picturesque Sonoma, in the heart of California’s Wine country, where I am free to paint on location most days of the year.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Let art in! Open up to the possibility that displaying original art and collaborating with the artist on events might bring for your business. Whether you own a coffee shop, a winery with a tasting room, or a car shop, and as long as you have empty wall space, there is room for art. Invite a local artist whose art matches your taste, and decor if you prefer, to display their art and host social events.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Awakening spontaneity! As an art teacher, it is definitely most rewarding to hear that I helped someone break a barrier around being creative and expressing themselves artistically. “I didn’t know I could do that” or ” I didn’t think I had it in me” are some of a few phrases I heard from my students recently. Others are just amazed at the possibilities the artistic mediums create.
