We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kathleen R. O’Neill Schuler. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kathleen R. O’Neill below.
Kathleen R. O’Neill, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My most meaningful projects are those where I experiment with methods that are new to me. I am a problem solver by nature which very often leads to learning and developing new techniques.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a visual artist and freelance graphic designer. Both bodies of work define my artistic practice as I aim to communicate an idea or a dynamic in both.
I love good design, and always begin with a plan, idea, or structure. Being concept driven, I enjoy being given a task to execute. If I am not given a task, I create one for myself as that is what creates meaning for my art.
I call my fine art my “Hanging Loose” collection. This body of work is created on natural cotton duck where I apply a gesso ground which is integral to the total design of the piece and I leave parts of the natural cotton duck exposed. I paint with oil over gessoed areas leaving some white space sealing oil painted areas with a thin layer of cold wax. I create my own hangers or frames out of wire or cotton duck.
My digital creations are primarily vector illustrations which very often begin as line drawings. Vector graphics are scalable without loss of quality and offer a versatility that I have only recently begun to explore.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, I believe there is. Since youth I have never ceased to love a creative idea, or a beautifully executed response to what could have easily been dismissed and executed in a rote or mundane manner. For me that is the beauty of the artistic process.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The freedom to create.
