We recently connected with Joel McClosky and have shared our conversation below.
Joel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
Having run a brewery and cocktail bar in Asheboro for nearly a decade, I have come to understand that success is not just about the quality of the beer or cocktails we produce. Rather, it is about the passion and dedication we put into every drink. It’s about the conversations we have as a team, ensuring that everyone is on the same page, and the connections we make with our customers, who often become our friends.
I strongly believe in empowering my team to make decisions, so long as those decisions are guided by our core values. These values are simple yet powerful: be authentic, care for the community, and always prioritize our customers.
Each accomplishment, mistake, or moment of laughter shared over a freshly tapped keg or freshly shaken cocktail contributes to our journey and makes it all the more memorable.
Joel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Joel McClosky, the founder of Four Saints Brewing Company, has an interesting story. After completing his psychology degree in 2000 from Washington & Jefferson College, he pursued a Master of Education from Duquesne University in 2003. For more than 10 years, Joel worked in the education sector, teaching in various places, including Dublin, Ireland.
In 2004, Joel started teaching at Asheboro City Schools, where he showed his passion for teaching. He received the Apple of Excellence Award and was a finalist for Teacher of the Year in 2012.
In 2011, a turning point occurred when he and his colleague Andrew attended a local festival and noticed a gap in the local beer market. This realization sparked an idea for a microbrewery in Asheboro. Their vision gained traction with a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012, which garnered significant attention. Soon, establishments throughout North Carolina were eager to feature their brews.
Four Saints Brewing Company opened on May 6, 2015, and has since received numerous accolades and recognition in prominent magazines. In 2023, it was even recognized as one of the top employers in North Carolina. The brewery is not only a local favorite but has also become a popular destination for travelers.
In 2023, Four Saints began canning operations and is set to launch The Pharmacy, a craft cocktail space.
Joel is not just a brewer, but also an active member of his community. He has served on several boards, led the Triad Brewers Alliance, and was recognized as the first Main Street Champion of Asheboro in 2022. On a personal level, Joel is married to Kristen and they have a daughter named Estella. Additionally, they have fostered three young girls over the years. Joel’s remarkable journey, both in his professional and personal life, is a testament to his commitment and enthusiasm.
Any advice for managing a team?
First off, trust your team. Give them the reins to make decisions and the tools to do it right. Most people will take action once they receive permission and are equipped to do the thing. Keep those communication lines wide open; it’s like the lifeblood of a good team vibe. Celebrate the wins, big or small, because everyone needs and responds to encouragement. Stay hungry for learning and growth, and remember, change isn’t bad; it keeps things fresh. And don’t forget to strike that balance between work and play; we’re all human. Everyone wants to feel worthwhile. Lead by example because people buy into the leader before they buy into the plan. Encourage teamwork because most people don’t know how to be successful alone. It’s about creating a space where everyone feels valued and pumped to be part of the journey.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
At the heart of it all, our undying passion for brewing sets the tone. We’re not just serving drinks; we’re sharing a piece of our hearts with every pour. Being active in the Asheboro community has been a game-changer; we’re all one big family here. Consistency in our brews, always being open to feedback, and pushing the envelope with fresh ideas have been our mantra. And, of course, building real, genuine relationships has been vital. Whether chatting with a supplier or laughing with a first-time visitor at our taproom, those connections make all the difference. It’s about pouring love, quality, and a bit of ourselves into everything we do.
