We were lucky to catch up with Nova Krasner recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nova, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I think in this field of creativity, risk is always at the forefront of what you do. It’s scary to be in this industry and to produce what you love without any foundations behind it. But, I am a person who likes risk, and I especially love the reward of taking them.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started in the fashion industry as a model, and slowly found myself appreciating the other facets of creativity. In turn, this helped me solidify my passions in product development and designing, which I currently do as my full time job. My craft expands past just fabric, yarns, and materials. Every piece I make for IAMNOVAZO, my crochet and knitwear brand, is handmade with love and energy through each and every garment. I think what sets me apart from my peers is how I go about my career. Alongside making clothing, I also produce fashion shows bi-annually and tell stories that encapsulate the garments as well as the mood of the show. My latest show, “Hokum By IAMNOVAZO”, was about the youth of the mind, the beauty in chaos, and the parts of life that are untold, but important to us. I would consider myself a very spiritual artist, where my work ties the bridge between the physical and metaphysical. In this, everything I create has a connection to my life, and my favorite thing thus far in my designing career is hearing this idea resonating through my followers and community. I think the main takeaway I want people to realize about what I do is that its stories of my life through fashion, and I think thats a beautiful thing to have close to me.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A story I can share is a recent one of where I had to change how I do business. For all the viewers, and to give a bit of context, I am an entrepreneur and owner of a small clothing business currently. In this, everything business wise has had to flow through me, and at times that becomes stressful being a full-time student on top of that. I had to change my business plan in the sense of where I had to take a season off of producing shows, and focus on the longevity of my brand. There’s a proverb I really love to reference in times of reflection and it states “Fall seven times and stand up eight”. I take this quote through my life, and through my business career.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the journey of creating whatever project you are on. I say this because the end goal is definitely rewarding to see, but nothing compares to being in the moment of creating and realizing: “I am following my passions in this moment”. For example, I think what enthralls me about fashion has to be runway. Seeing the live moment of the audience viewing your work is a feeling that cannot be explained. Not only that, but the show day itself, before the models hit the runway. Preparing them, doing those rehearsals, and finally as they are lined up, ready to walk out and give it their all, that feeling is indescribable. That’s why I do what I do in this life. I follow my heart, and its lead me to the most fascinating of places.
