We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dominique Laporte-Marginean a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominique, thanks for joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
A Leap of Faith: Relocating to Texas
It was a crisp, sunny morning when my husband called me at work and asked me if I would move to Texas. I knew very well that this was a life-altering decision, but I felt excited. With our hearts filled with excitement and uncertainty, we decided to embark on a journey that would change the course of our lives: we moved to the Lone Star State, Texas, with our, at the time, three kids.
I had spent years building my career as a lawyer, and the idea of momentarily setting it aside was daunting. However, the opportunity for my husband to pursue his career in the United States was too promising to ignore. We believed that this move had the potential to be a transformative chapter in our lives.
Since I had been an expat many times in the past as a kid or a student, I had a pretty good idea of the involvement. But still, the USA was new territory for me.
The decision was not made lightly. We carefully considered the risks and rewards. Leaving behind the comfort of our familiar surroundings, our friends, and the network I had built in my legal career was no small matter. But we knew that taking risks was integral to personal growth and pursuing one’s dreams. We also knew that it was part of our vision for our life and our family.
The challenges became apparent as we settled into our new home in Texas. Adapting to a new culture, navigating the U.S. immigration system, and finding our place in a foreign land were all part of the journey. For me, stepping away from my career was challenging, but I believed that my family’s happiness and our collective pursuit of dreams were equally important.
During this transitional period, I began to explore new avenues and interests. I immersed myself in local communities, met people from diverse backgrounds, and embraced the Texan way of life. It wasn’t always easy, but it was undeniably rewarding.
Over time, it became evident that this experience was not just about sacrifice but about gaining a broader perspective on life, culture, and personal resilience. My children were thriving in their new environment, and my husband was making strides in his career. The support and strength of our family unit were our guiding lights.
As the years passed, I continued to nurture my passion for helping others, albeit in a different context. I engaged in online volunteer work, providing help and advice to newcomers and other expats worldwide. These experiences not only maintained my professional skills but also allowed me to contribute to my new community in meaningful ways. I created an expat community, started a podcast, wrote a book, and built an online presence. I started to create expat, travel and lifestyle online content.
In retrospect, our move to Texas was undoubtedly a risk that tested our resolve and resilience. It challenged us to redefine success and happiness. Although I paused my career as a lawyer, I have gained a wealth of experiences, insights, and personal growth that no courtroom or law office could have provided.
This journey has taught me that daring to take action, even when it entails sacrifices, can lead to remarkable personal and familial growth. It’s about embracing the unknown, believing in the power of resilience, and having the courage to pursue dreams as a family.
Today, as I look back on our journey, I am grateful for the risks we took, the lessons we learned, and the beautiful tapestry of experiences that now define our lives in the heart of Texas… and then it continued in Georgia when we moved again, six years later!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I had to unlearn was the belief that success was defined by financial wealth. Infact, I once equated success with money, believing that the accumulation of wealth was the ultimate measure of achievement. However, a profound moment in my life led me to reevaluate this perspective.
The back story goes like this: I was diligently pursuing my career, working long hours, and striving to increase my income. This mindset was ingrained in me without really thinking about it. I was not obsessed by making money, but I was naturally making a link between success and making money.
Then, one day, a very dear person asked me a simple yet powerful question: “Do you have success in what you do?” Without much thought, I confidently replied, “Yes, I guess… I make enough money.” However, her response took me by surprise. She asked, “So, money is success to you?”
Those words struck a chord within me. I realized that I had been viewing success through a narrow lens. I had been neglecting other important aspects of success. This awakening prompted a deep introspection, and I began to redefine what success meant to me.
I came to understand that true success is a multifaceted concept. It encompasses not only financial prosperity but also happiness, fulfillment, good health, loving relationships, personal growth, and the ability to contribute positively to the lives of others. Success is about finding a balance in life, pursuing one’s passions, and cherishing the moments and experiences that bring joy.
I started prioritizing my well-being, nurturing my relationships, and engaging in activities that brought me genuine satisfaction. I realized that success, as I now define it, is about living a life that aligns with my values, passions, and aspirations. It’s about being content with who I am and my impact on the world rather than the numbers in my bank account.
Unlearning the belief that success was solely tied to money allowed me to lead a more balanced, meaningful, and fulfilling life. It taught me that success is a deeply personal and subjective journey, and it encouraged me to focus on the holistic aspects of well-being rather than the narrow pursuit of financial wealth.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
One of the books that has been very important to me is ‘The One Thing’ by Gary Keller. This book significantly impacted my management and entrepreneurial philosophy because it emphasized the importance of focus and prioritization. Keller’s idea of identifying the ‘one thing’ that, when done, makes everything else easier or unnecessary resonated with me deeply. It taught me the value of honing in on the most critical tasks and projects, which has effectively managed my time and resources.
In addition to ‘The One Thing’ and many other books that have impacted how I work, I regularly explore various resources such as podcasts, online articles, and YouTube videos to expand my general knowledge and enhance my problem-solving skills. I believe that learning is a lifelong journey, and staying informed and adaptable is essential in the ever-evolving world of management and entrepreneurship.
