We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful HunOuk Park. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with HunOuk below.
HunOuk, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Recently, I co-composed music with my dear friend and accomplished composer Joe Davies for the feature documentary ‘Troubled Water,’ directed by Davis Huber.
Troubled Water Film explores the economic, political and environmental implications of human impact on Michigan’s fresh water . An epic 425-mile, 40 day standup paddle journey from Mackinac Island to Lansing is the narrative backbone of our story. The route is designed to show the beauty of the Great Lakes, highlight current environmental issues, and finish in the Great Lakes State capitol: the political epicenter with the power to protect our public waters. The Great Lakes have already seen irreparable damage, but some issues still hang in the balance and hope is still very much alive.

HunOuk, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My love for music began with playing the violin. I established myself as a concert violinist, performing all over the world, before embarking on another great passion of mine: music composition for the media. I completed my master’s course at Columbia College Chicago in 2022, and I now reside in Los Angeles. Here, I’ve had the privilege of assisting and collaborating with amazing composers such as Jesi Nelson, Brandon Campbell, and Joe Davies.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is that every day, I have the opportunity to learn and refine my true passion: music. As an artist, I acknowledge the inevitable struggles, moments of self-doubt, and sleepless nights, but I wholeheartedly embrace this journey. I am profoundly grateful that my profession allows me to continually enhance what I love doing the most.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2015, I faced a difficult decision: I had to leave behind my friends and my career as a violinist in England to return to South Korea for military service. This period was emotionally challenging, as I had to leave everything behind. However, it was also a crucial time for me to introspect and find the courage to embark on a career change into film composition.
