We were lucky to catch up with Tawanna Wells recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tawanna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
What would I do differently if I had to start over. Actually, I am starting over. I have renamed and restructured my business name. I changed it to T’s Catering so clients will know I don’t just provide desserts/sweets, but savory foods as well. Sometimes, it’s in the name. I feel the name matters in this industry. So, by starting over and renaming my business will change the prospective in other minds.
When I first started out, I only wanted to focus on desserts, but because of how this industry has changed so much you need to be versatile. You have to change and keep up with what’s going on in your industry. I want everyone to know I am a caterer first, desserts/pastry second.
Tawanna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started cooking at a very young age. I would help my auntie whenever my brother and I would go home to Mississippi to visit our family. My auntie loves to cook, and it was exciting and fascinating to see all of the different food and the smells of the food throughout the house. People from all over the neighborhood would come and eat. My mom would cook but not as much as my auntie. I would make little things for my parents and brother because I wanted to give them my joy by cooking and making them happy.
Family bonding comes from food. My love for food and sharing it with others brings me joy to see them loving my food. It brings comfort to my heart. I do what I do because I love it.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Currently, I am still building my social media presence. I was always told to be consistent. Pick certain days you want to post on. Still with those days. Get on as many platforms as possible. I am still a work in progress.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source is word of mouth and networking. That is how people learn who you are and find out about you. If someone you know recommends you then, that next person/company would want to use you too.
