Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to William Connolly. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
William , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
I’ve always felt misunderstood in certain aspects. But music has been a great way for me to cope. As a new songwriter, a song is the perfect way to express how you feel. Music is something that can always bring people together, no matter how misunderstood you feel. You can feel in it your soul. I also love sharing songs. When you feel like you don’t know what to say to someone, share a song with them, that’ll let them know how you feel if you have trouble opening up or feeling misunderstood.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Growing up sports was my main outlet, as I got a little older my dad bought me a drum set and it all started there. I watched and learned from many drummers and learned all different styles. Like Buddy Rich, Philly Joe Jones, To even Travis Barker. When I got into highschool I attended The Rock music Academy in Woodstock New York. I learned a lot about what goes into the craft, musicianship and much more. We did shows that payed tribute to some of the greatest artists of our time. Marvin Gaye, Tom Petty, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Micheal Jackson etc. That school gave me so much and I’m very grateful for what I learned. I’ve been writing songs for about a year now and I hope to have my new singles out by the beginning of next year.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
What I’m learning is that you have to be the one to give your song value. Put it out for others to enjoy. But if you’re always trying to get opinions of your song before you release it, then it can mess with the authenticity of it. You have to be proud of yourself upon creation and everything else will fall into place. With that being said the most rewarding part is putting out a project for people to be able to enjoy and relate to.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think In a fast moving society, we often look at having to have success young. I also think that’s why most people who are serious about the music craft stop early, even when they have talent. You have to believe in yourself and just trust the process even when people call you crazy or delusional. If you have a dream you have to chase it and be patient. This is something that can be applied in all aspects of life not just music. Be productive and work hard everyday to strive towards your goals.
