Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Judy Ho. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Judy, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
One thing my parents taught me was to always work hard and never take anything for granted. They (and I) were immigrants and it strikes me how significant it was that they up and left the lives they knew in their 30s to move to a country where they barely knew the language and didn’t have their bearings, with less than $200 in their savings account. It is a remarkable sacrifice they made and really makes me grateful for the opportunities afforded to me by being in this country and being able to pursue my interests, hobbies, and my dream career..

Judy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a triple board certified and licensed Clinical and Forensic Neuropsychologist, a tenured Associate Professor at Pepperdine University, and published author, penning “Stop Self-Sabotage,” published by HarperCollins in August 2019; a book detailing a scientifically driven six-step program which has been translated into 7 additional languages around the world. My second book which I co-authored with Max Dubrow entitled “I’ll Give it to Your Straight-ish: What Your Teen Wants You to Know,” is published by Flashpoint and contains my evidence-based tips to help parents raise healthy and resilient teenagers. My third book, The New Rules of Attachment, which focuses on healing insecure attachment styles at any age to optimize well-being, career, goal attainment, and relationships with family, friends, and colleagues, will be published by Hachette Book Group in 2024.
I maintain a private practice in Manhattan Beach, CA where I specialize in comprehensive neuropsychological assessments and expert witness work. I regularly appear as an expert psychologist on television, podcasts, radio, and contributes to other media including print and electronic periodicals. I was a co-host on the syndicate daytime television talk show “The Doctors,” co-host of CBS’s Face the Truth, and host of The SuperCharged Life podcast which focuses on scientific, tangible tips for physical and mental wellness, and strategies for motivation and productivity, produced by Stage 29 Podcast Productions.
I am an avid researcher and is a two-time recipient of the National Institute of Mental Health Services Research Award. I host an active research program to improve mental health care for high-need populations and is the chair of the Institutional Review Board at Pepperdine University. My treatment approaches integrate the scientific principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. I often speak at national and local events including research, clinical, and corporate conferences and workshops for organizations and schools.
I received my bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Business Administration from UC Berkeley, and my masters and doctorate from SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. I completed a National Institute of Mental Health sponsored fellowship at UCLA’s Semel Institute.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Believing in yourself and knowing that there is always room for improvement, having confidence yet always embracing humility is key to being successful and staying on top of your game.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Using active listening and expression of empathy to get to the core of what matters for the people on your team – and finding a way to help them meet those goals – will strengthen their dedication to the team and also boost their morale.
