Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Angie N Sandoval V. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Angie N, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Many times, as a small business owner, you have to wear many different hats and go the extra mile to obtain the desired results in your business. Sometimes in what is considered a “regular job” you can live comfortably and not have a big weight on your shoulders compared to being a business owner with a lot of pressure on you. It’s quite rare to have anything resembling a “regular job” in the entertainment industry anyway. We’ve all heard about the hours, consistency, and everything about our jobs being crazy, and it’s all true!
I consider myself a happy small business owner, and I am greatly passionate about being an engineer with a musical focus. Working in the music industry feels rewarding since that has always been my dream. I’ve always known my calling is here, from the beginning of my journey working as a mixing and recording engineer to this day working towards my own music studio. Excellence and efficiency are in my nature, especially when it comes to my work, and working hard for something I can call my own is incredibly fulfilling!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Angie Sandoval. I am a Colombian recording and mixing engineer. Music has been my passion since I was a child. When I was a teenager I tried to record my own songs and discovered the world of music production. For that reason, I decided to pursue a career in the audio industry. The services I offer bring to life the vision artists have for their music. I work hand-in-hand with them to obtain an authentic sound for each of their songs, and I prepare their songs so the world can hear them, whether on digital streaming platforms, the radio, or a live show.
The moments where I feel most proud of my work are when an artist releases their music and it connects with many different people, or when they are playing a song live and people are singing in unison. Knowing that I was part of that process is a special feeling that words cannot completely describe.
I connect personally with every project I work on, and that makes my work stand out. I like to ask the right questions and understand what the artist wants to convey with their songs. That way, I record and mix each song customized to the style of each artist but still at the level of industry standards.
I love what I do and it shows, and people seem to like that!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Throughout my journey, there have been several moments in which my resilience could be highlighted. But there is one in particular that I would like to talk about.
I’m Angie Sandoval, a Colombian immigrant.
When I made the decision to pursue a career in audio, I decided to attend FIRST Institute, where I had an incredible experience with professional instructors who taught me the fundamentals of this industry and motivated me to follow my goals. I became president of the Honors Club, was presented with opportunities to gain professional experience, and even
graduated as the Valedictorian, it was amazing!
It was not a walk in the park though, I’m Angie Sandoval, a Colombian immigrant. When I started school at age 18, I had never studied somewhere where only English was spoken. Even though I considered my English level to be intermediate at the time, I soon realized just how much I didn’t know. I had to study twice as hard and really get out of my comfort zone in an environment that was culturally different for me, it wasn’t easy. This experience taught me life and career lessons for which I am grateful. I am sure that if I set my mind to something I can achieve it if I work for it.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I think some of the most overlooked resources are social media and the internet. You can really find helpful resources and communities that you can be part of and connect with people with similar goals. I have been a recipient of different scholarships, and I’ve benefited from many educational and mentoring programs, which I would never have known about if it wasn’t for social media. Earlier this year I was part of the mentoring program of Los Angeles-based Audio Engineer Christal Jerez. She shared her industry knowledge with me, helped me set relevant career goals, and gave me access to resources from top brands in the industry. Christal is also co-host of a Podcast called “True Peak Hour,” where I have been able to learn about different experiences on various topics from professionals in our industry and implement that knowledge into my work.
Social media allows us to let the world know about our businesses, our art, and what we are passionate about while connecting with people around the world and having access to resources that can be beneficial to our careers.
