We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Olivier Charland a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Olivier, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with important influences in our lives. Is there a historical figure you look up to?
I’m really fascinated with a lot of artists works but I am very fond of the attitude of John Baldessari. All his art is so clever yet simple and funny. His whole body of work is always conceptual but beautiful at the same time.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a trained graphic designer that now works as a freelance art director and also an artist making paintings and murals. I’ve been lucky to work for some of the best companies and studios. My work is very crafty, mixing a lot of mediums together in an attempt to make authentic and cheerful work.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
sometimes I feel like people are scared to try new things once they get comfortable in their craft. What always helped me when I felt stuck was try new things and not being shy to share the work. Even though its not perfect it’s always full of learnings and push forward your practice. Playing around new things always developed into paid gigs later. So, never stop experimenting!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Ultimately, word of mouth is the best. That can translate into never stop helping others with their projects or being out there in the social media sphere. When I started I said yes to a bunch of projects to help out friends. Their new album cover or their coffee shop brand. It helps get real projects but also gives you more freedom to try new things and that’s what ultimately brings in new clients in the style you want to push.
