We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chris Robinson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chris, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I have a regular 8-5 job at Tik Tok but corporate jobs are never ultimately satisfying for the soul. Creatives in Austin almost have to have a day time job in order to do what truly makes us happy. I don’t take my work home with me, but I constantly think about ways I can improve sonics and direction for our band Sweet Limb.
Chris, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a 38 year old creative originally from Pearland, Texas south of Houston, but I’ve been in the Austin area since 2008. I started writing music in College on guitar and piano picking up chords and tabs from friends around campus. Watching MJ as a kid made me realize that music and performing was everything. John Mayer and Frank Ocean inspired me to approach songwriting. I had a lot of really bad songs to get out and I had no clue what my voice really was until the pandemic. I experimented with a psychedelic for treatment resistant depression called Ketamine. It was one of the most important experiences of my life. I now find joy in blending Hip Hop, Soul, Pop and R&B elements together to express my musings on this weird and beautiful thing we call life.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Just showing up. Actually streaming a song or two your homie or a band posts. This is obviously a super saturated market and attention spans are at an all time low. If you don’t got shit else going on just show up to the gig in your sweatpants. The loneliness epidemic ain’t no joke, so if you can afford the 5 or 10 bucks to see a local band and have a brewski that sounds way better than Netflix by your lonesome. Its good to recharge and have those nights every now and again but y’all know what i’m talkin bout man.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
People rocking with the sonics. The people vibing with the live shows. If good energy is exchanged and we get showered in compliments I love that for us. We’re here to bring joy, love, and positivity while bringing attention to issues we care about. #BLACKLIVESMATTER
