We were lucky to catch up with Nicole Chang recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’d like to say I’ve always known I wanted to do something in the creative field that’d allow for artistic representation and freedom of expression. It wasn’t until almost 3 years ago, that I wanted to expand my modeling portfolio and pursue it on a more professional stand point. My interests and hobbies growing up had two thing in common : imaginative and expressive, so being able to transform infront of the camera and convey a message or tell a story fits the narrative. I believe in creating opportunities for yourself, and that’s one of the ways of turning a dream into reality. How you market yourself is a business in itself, and once you free yourself of the worry of being seen , it will take you far. As for entrepreneurship, my teenage self would invision owning a brand that was unique and bold, a safe space for the weirdos and wild, the elegant and fashionable. Thus, Vicious Delicious Accessories was born.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I first stepped into the industry in my teens. I was awed as it was the first time I had my hair and makeup done professionally. Growing up, I loved having my picture taken & my friends and I would scout raw gritty locations in the neighborhood that would serve as a photo opp; sketchy alleys, graffiti walls, etc all was an adventure we’d indulge in. What initially stemmed from curiosity later became a passion I pursued more seriously and I haven’t looked back since. Someone I need to shout-out is @missmissyphoto, our paths crossed later in life & her amazing photography work helped put me on the radar and together I was made a covergirl and published in a popular pin up magazine. I dreamt of modeling for clothing brands and have been blessed with the privilege of doing so. With any craft comes constant development, you are always striving to do better, expand, work on the next big project, etc. I love creative collaboration and the friendships made along the way; meeting @glamourgirl216 has also been so pivotal. With mutual understanding and excitement, we have been able to experiment with different looks as she is such a skilled makeup artist, and she has captured promo photos regarding my small business Vicious Delicious.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Probably that having the urge to create is like having an itch you have to scratch. It shouldn’t be neglected as it can cause mental and emotional frustration. The ultimate peace and satisfaction it brings to be able to have an idea come to life, is rewarding. Most people’s day jobs are not fulfilling, and a creative outlet whether or not it gets monetized is crucial for mental health. It separates you from the ordinary and mundane; you are free to explore and imagine without limitation. It takes courage and confidence to be able to put yourself out there, and I’d like to think every creative would agree with this. You are choosing to be seen and not be afraid, to completely showcase your work and flourishing potential as your growth is being documented infront of the public. You have to be the first person to believe in yourself and in your work. Creating is fascinating, exhausting ,unpredictable, inspiring, and addicting. It comes in many forms and looks unique to each individual.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Honestly there’s a few, as previously mentioned being able to have an idea come to life is surreal – but so is being able to feel and see your own growth and success ( which many of us define differently ). Being a creative is a form of stress relief, that allows you to communicate who you are and what you believe in. It’s rewarding to express your perspectives in the form of art. There’s a great pleasure that derives from being able to adapt to new challenges and experiences in your journey. Creating is impactful, and it’s most rewarding knowing someone loves and believes in you and your work, and that you’re able to inspire someone to come out of their shell and try something new. There is nothing wrong with being who you are and wanting to explore different sides of yourself.
