We were lucky to catch up with Jamie Hurt recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jamie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
The biggest risk I’ve ever taken was venturing out on my own to launch Jamie Hurt Copywriting. With several years of experience working as a copywriter for various companies, I had grown accustomed to the security of a steady paycheck, benefits, paid time off—all the perks that come with a traditional job. However, after experiencing three different layoffs, I quickly discovered that job security wasn’t a guarantee—even in large, established companies.
After those layoffs and months of fruitless job hunting, I reached a pivotal decision: I needed to create opportunities for myself. And that’s exactly what I did. I stopped scouring job boards for the perfect role. I stopped applying to the roles that never led anywhere. Instead, I started networking (a ton), set up my website and social media profiles, established efficient systems and processes to run my business smoothly, and took on any task necessary to boost my visibility and connect with potential clients.
Fast forward three months, and here I am, looking back at the incredible initial success of Jamie Hurt Copywriting. Not only have I welcomed seven clients on board, but I’ve also uncovered a deeper passion for copywriting and a strong drive to excel as a business owner. Although launching my own business was a risk, I’d say it’s definitely been worth it.

My lifelong passion for writing and my fascination with what drives people’s buying decisions led me to pursue a major in English and Psychology at the University at Albany, SUNY, where I graduated with Summa Cum Laude honors and became a proud member of Phi Beta Kappa.
