We were lucky to catch up with Vago Galindo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Vago, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I feel like I’m lucky since my mom wanted my brothers and I to be in something “artsy”. I was always involved in extracurricular activities after school: painting, singing, making crafts and that sort of stuff. One day my brother, David, asked for a guitar and when my mom brought it home there was no turning back, I got obsessed with music. There’s something cool about making noise and seeing a reaction from other people. I come from a small city in Northern Mexico and making a career in music never crossed my mind, it just didn’t seem like an option until I was in college studying Industrial Engineering and I had my midlife crisis when I was 18. I freaked out, I realized I’ve never really thought of what I wanted in life or had even thought of that. I had to really think through what I wanted to do and then I realized that the only thing I wanted to do was to create music and once I got that thought in my mind. I haven’t stopped making music.
Vago, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Vago Galindo, I’m a music producer and a mixer engineer based in Los Angeles and raised in Sonora, Mexico.
I started playing music when I was in high school, I’ve always been a geek and that led me into music recording and production. I was fortunate enough to end up going to Berklee College of Music and then I ended up in sunny LA.
I like to embrace the chaos that surrounds me and try to make sense of it. There’s something very exciting of not knowing what’s going to happen while making music or in life in general, and I thrive on that search, it always makes me high.
I’ve been grateful enough to have worked with a lot of artists that I admire and I can call friends like Juanes, which got me a Grammy and a Latin Grammy, Elvis Costello, Duki, Sin Bandera, Juan Luis Guerra, Tony Levin, Sabino, Wiplash, Vale, Alejandra Guzman, RBD, Gloria Trevi, Nicole Favre, Adriel Favela, Camila Fernandez, Alejandro Santamaria, Marco Mares among others.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
The long hours and late nights also the fact you’re always working on your craft. I literally spend all my time and resources on making music.
It’s really tough for other people to understand that you’re fully committed on following your passion.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Creating something that no one has ever heard of. That’s the goal.
