Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jasmine Kelly. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jasmine, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
Starting a business is the hardest part, continuing to be a business owner requires discipline and sacrifices. Starting my business has been one of the best decisions I have made. It has brought me so many fulfilling opportunities from working with brides to meeting new people and networking myself across social media and at my HBCU. Being a business owner requires you to wear many different hats, you are your own marketing team, scheduling team, CEO, and customer service and many more. While doing all of this isn’t easy and can become overwhelming, finding what strategies work best for your business is the most important part. Finding my niche helped my scale up my business. I’ve found that I have a passion for teaching people how to do their own makeup. I created 1 minute TikTok videos teaching other people tips and tricks I have learned over the years of being a makeup artist and doing my own makeup in general. People loved my page because they were fascinated with learning new methods on my techniques. It isn’t all sunshine and rainbows when publishing your work online, there were mean comments and not everyone liked my work, while others gave me feedback. I took the feedback and improved my work even more.

Jasmine, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Jasmine Kelly a 20 year old makeup artist from Largo, MD. I started doing pageants when I was 13 years old and have been fascinated with makeup ever since. I started doing my friend’s makeup in middle and high school. Later when decided to go to North Carolina A&T State University I decided to take Makeup Artistry seriously. I networked myself across my college campus and was supported by many girls. Being a perfectionist is what sets me apart from others whether i’m trying to perfect the makeup look, the client’s experience, the client playlist, or even the content I post. I’m always thinking about how I can my the experience for my clients 100% better because it’s the little things that matter.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me has been through social media or old fashioned word of mouth. Referrals are your best friend when entering the world of entrepreneurship. The experience you give your clients will determine if they want to refer you to their friends and family. Having a great experience when receiving a service is a great feeling so they would want the people close to them to experience the same.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building an audience on social media has brought so many people to my business. Build your audience based on the type of people you want to attract. Finding your niche is the best way to attract more people to your page. My niche is tutorials. People come to my page to learn the process and new techniques. Continue posting even if you feel like it may not go viral, I posted a 30 second tutorial and didn’t think it would go viral now the video is sitting at 10.8M plays on Instagram. Don’t be afraid to post content and if you do not know where to start, follow accounts similar to what you’re interested in and see what content works for them.
