We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rebecca Trujillo Vest a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rebecca, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I would say my meaningful projects are my body of work as Osmunda Music and my role as co-founder of Pandion Music Foundation. The former is my artistic output as a musician, which spans many years and has seen releases including my most recent album, “Take My Hand.” Several of my albums have been submitted for GRAMMY nominations, and this year I am under consideration for Best Alternative Music Album and the GRAMMY Best Song For Social Change Special Merit Award.
Rebecca, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a young girl, I began singing and playing guitar in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I found private moments shared with my guitar to be a nurturing experience I describe as similar to a mother’s love—which led me to my path as a music creator and my performing persona, Osmunda Music.
With my husband Michael Vest I am a founding member of the band Space Babies. In 2010 We opened Earthstar Creation Center, a recording studio in Venice, California. Together we have co-produced many projects from this magical, creative space, and artists who have recorded there include Beck, The National, P!nk, Space Babies, and Pharrell Williams. We are passionate activists for a range of causes from global warming and arts education to homelessness and hunger.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
We can be present and mindful of the challenges that music creators face. In 2022, I founded the nonprofit 501(c)(3) Pandion Music Foundation (PMF) dedicated to fostering growth in the music creator community through free online educational resources, workshops, and wellness guidance across all lines of diversity and inclusion. All of our PMF initiatives are free of charge.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I would say it’s being part of a community. And a community of like-minded and sometimes not so like-minded people who come together to share and give back. In my opinion, that is force for positive change in the world.
