We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kai Ming Yang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kai Ming, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
In retrospection, I harbor a wish for an earlier start to my creative career, occasionally envisioning an alternative trajectory that might have led to different professional standing today. Yet, I’ve come to realize that dwelling too much on such thoughts is impractical.
As a professional in the creative industry, I assert that our artistic concepts derive from personal experiences and the journeys we traverse. Genuine emotions are forged in the pod of lived experiences, forming the foundation of our creative expressions.
Fundamentally, our perceptions evolve with time, shaped by experiences. In essence, we are storytellers in the creative realm, sharing unique perspectives and individual journeys.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Based in New York, Kai Ming Yang is an object designer who revels in the interplay of materials and forms. Through diverse material choices, he aims to highlight their intrinsic beauty and challenge our traditional interactions with everyday objects—spanning furniture, lighting, and accessories. His overarching goal is to heighten awareness of how objects profoundly shape our perception. Yang sees each creation as more than an item; it’s a statement—an extension of our physical selves and a reflection of our identity as living beings.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
For me, it’s “Connection” in the world of art and design. While we often get caught up in our own creative journeys and emotions, I believe it goes beyond self-expression—it’s about sharing. Art and design, in my view, are powerful forces that bring people together. It’s about finding a collective mind-set, a teamwork of shared stories that vibes with others. It’s these shared narratives that create a genuine connection within the diverse landscape of creativity.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
In the realm of my artistic journey, the most fulfilling instances arise when individuals resonate with my creations. While financial success is undoubtedly valuable, the unique joy derived from encountering someone who authentically appreciates my work is unparalleled. As I’ve emphasized, art and design are conduits for sharing and fostering connections among people.
Diverse in cultural backgrounds and life experiences, individuals unite through the shared appreciation of artistic expressions. In these moments, connections transcend divisive ideologies such as race, nationality, and culture. For me, these instances represent some of the purest and most profound connections that can unfold between people—a testament to the unifying power of art and design.
