We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jenny DiNuoscio a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jenny, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
As a small business owner, I am able to custom massages for my clients based off their needs. Most places will charge additional fees for add-on services. I offer my clients a menu for them to select from, and each service is already included in the price. This allows my client to create their own relaxation session.
Jenny, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My journey in Massage Therapy started over a decade before I graduated and received my license. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and received a lymphadenectomy under her arms. The lack of lymph nodes caused her arms to swell and was painful. I would gently massage her arms to help the swelling go down. That’s when the famous words were uttered, “Jen, you are so good at this; you should do this!” In 2005, her cancer returned to her appendix. She was not given a positive diagnosis and eventually entered hospice care. While in hospice, the nurses would take her to hydrotherapy, which she loved. I would continue to rub her back and arms until she passed in 2006. Her “You should do this!” statement always lingered in the back of my head. However, like most young adults in their late teens, I didn’t listen to her suggestion to become a massage therapist. Instead, I decided to enter the field of security and stayed there for 15 years.
Fast forward to 2021. I was still working in security and excelling in my career, but I felt a push to get into Massage Therapy. For 15 years, my mom’s words lingered in my head until I finally decided to take the plunge. I left my career behind on a Thursday and started school that following Monday. It was a huge adjustment going from Corporate America to student life, but after a brief rocky period, I was able to gain my footing and soar. I finally graduated in June 2022 with honors, and the rest is history!
I own Jenny D Luxury-Relaxation Studio, offering Custom Massages, Medi-Cupping and Vacu-Theraoy, Luxury Massages, Lymphatic Drainage, and Lomi Lomi massage. I learn as much as I can so that I can offer my clients multiple treatment options. My ultimate goal is to heal and comfort those in hospice care and nursing homes.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
In my studio, I offer several products that I manufacture myself. I make candles, lip balms, massage oil, and shea butter blends.
I have been a candle maker for over 10 years, but starting wasn’t as easy as it sounds. I picked a vessel I wanted my candles to be in and then was able to branch out from there. I had to find the right wick for the vessel size, then match it to a wax blend that would burn properly. The fun part is creating scent blends that nobody else will have. Some turn out amazing, some get scrapped, but it’s all a part of the process!
My massage oils and shea butter blends are available to use in studio or for home use. After researching different oils and their properties I was able to create my own blends to enhance the experience for my clients.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients is word of mouth. We can create the image of our businesses via social media, but reviews and word of mouth are the ultimate source.
