We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lucy Rose. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lucy below.
Lucy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
When Greenlove Denver was started in 2017 there was a lot of stigma around cannabis consumers, as well as a lack of education about plant medicine. In order to learn more about the cannabis industry I started emerging myself in the culture, attending networking events, and connecting with other like-minded individuals online.
In regards to offering cannabis yoga classes to the public, that process took a few years to complete. I started with a 200-hour YTT training in 2016 from my guru, Saul David Raye, later on completing a 100-hour YTT training with Ganjasana, Cannabis Plant Spirit Yoga. After a few years of practicing cannabis yoga on my own I felt comfortable enough to offer Light & Lit Yoga classes to the public.
In terms of the learning process, I believe everything happens at its own pace. Especially in a newly regulated industry at the time there weren’t a lot of people who were public with their offerings which made the learning curve a bit difficult. However, once I found my community in the industry it was much easier to exchange knowledge and learn more about plant medicine.
What was most important to me was being an impactful and knowledgeable yoga instructor, making my clients feel comfortable in their own practice. I spent many years learning the benefits of Atma Yoga, which focuses on the balance of energy (sun/moon, masculine/feminine energy) which I was then able to share with others. I also spent a good deal of time learning more about mindful plant medicine consumption, ensuring I was offering a safe space for others to consume in.
Lucy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Greenlove Denver emerged in 2017 when cannabis consumption was still rather taboo even in the recreational city of Denver, Colorado. I found cannabis over 10 years ago as I approached my final months of college. It was during that time that I realized cannabis helped calm my mind and tame some of the tendencies from a Type A personality. I realized that plant medicine was a good tool for me, to become more grounded and present in the moment, as well as generally become more relaxed.
It was during that same time period that I found yoga in my studio apartment, 1,500 miles from home. I realized almost instantly that pairing cannabis with a yoga practice allowed for a more heightened mind-body connection that allowed me to drop into poses easier and tackle breath work with greater ease. Despite feeling that natural connection myself between cannabis and yoga there was little education or resources available to consumers like myself.
Today, Greenlove Wellness is an online resource for those modern consumers looking to incorporate cannabis into their everyday lifestyle. From wellness topics, food & drink, product reviews and more Greenlove Wellness is a resource for today’s consumers. We also offer Light & Lit Cannabis Yoga classes to consumers online and in the Denver area.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Back in the early days of sharing cannabis knowledge on Instagram it was fairly easy to connect with others using hashtags. Hashtags were a great way to tap into the niche audience and communicate with others directly. There wasn’t such thing as being shadow banned and it was easy to get engagement on your posts. When I started Greenlove Denver, I would spend a lot of time on social media interacting with others, commenting on their posts and building relationships online. I also coined the term #lityogi and others started using it to spread the message about cannabis and yoga.
Today, it’s much harder to reach like-minded individuals due to shadow bans and the algorithm. Back in the day I would see 100+ likes on posts vs. present day and I’m lucky to get 20 likes on a cannabis related post. Social media is 100% necessary for brands and individuals to promote themselves online, but the social media Gods haven’t made it easy. My advice is to stay consistent and produce appealing content. Content is king these days, especially the shift towards videos and reels. If you want to gain a following online follow the trends and genuinely interact on others pages.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being a creative for me is about the ability to express yourself freely without any restrictions. As a yoga instructor and influencer I have the creative freedom to create content as I see fit, and produce classes that I believe will resonate with students. You don’t have rules you have to follow like you would working for someone else. Any decision you make for your brand is your decision which is empowering.
I redid my website earlier this year and it was so fun to decide on a new logo, brand colors and imagery that fit the vibe I was looking for. Of course I consulted with other creative professionals, but at the end of the day I had the final say in the finished product. I love being able to come up with new ideas and execute them on my page. Opportunities are endless as a creative and that’s what makes it so fun.
