Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cheryl Moore. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Cheryl, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Being a self-taught photographer was difficult in the beginning because I wanted to learn every genre and aspect of photography. YouTube offered a lot of training, but I found it inconsistent and lacking. I joined KelbyOne in 2010 and started to grow, and I am still a member today. They offered so much training! I learned and photographed everything from HDR to Nature. Finally, several years later, I found wildlife photography to be my passion, but portraits paid the bills. The one obstacle that stood in my way was having a full-time career for our state prison system. I ran a part time portrait studio while working, photographing in the evenings and weekends. Finally retiring in 2017, I started focusing more on my portrait studio business. Four years ago, I joined Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and that’s when I really saw progress in my photography skills. The best learning experience for me was when I discovered the print competition process. Whether it was with PPA or local photography clubs, it is the most humbling and evolving training I found.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hi, I am Cheryl Moore, I own a portrait photography studio in Canon City, Colorado and love to help people look and feel their very best in front of the camera. While not photographing people, my husband and I find ourselves traveling the beautiful state we live in, as well as traveling the country to National Parks in search of wildlife. I would have to say wildlife and nature is my passion when it comes to photography but seeing the look on parents face when they see their child’s high school senior portraits for first time is priceless. I love them both. I love learning. I love helping others to learn. My only regret is that it took me so long before I discovered my love of photography.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In early 2020 I decided and started the process of rebranding my portrait studio. Then the pandemic hit. It was difficult to say the least. It felt like I was starting from the beginning again. New name, new logo, and new branding system. Clientele had disappeared for almost two years and still today I feel the pain of recovering from it and trying to figure out how to build those clients again.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
For wildlife photography, if I had to narrow it down, it would be being in the right place at the time with amazing light and my favorite subject, which is the grizzly bear. For my portraits it is the best experience for my high school senior clients that they and their parents will remember for years to come.
