We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Matthew I. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Matthew below.
Hi Matthew, thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
During Covid pivoting my business in the arts. An acting studio going on line via zoom And changing my lifestyle and re locating to miami and running an acting school in New York City and building a new one from scratch in miami.
Matthew, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Studied Meisner Technique as an Actor in NYC and completely transformed my life and started a career of wanting to coach and give back this work to other artists and helping unlock, and get actors to get out of their own way, old stories, old beliefs to walk into the future they can’t see yet —gives me such fulfillment. Teaching an acting technique that demands that you are in the moment and respond from your unique instincts and impulses and integrates all the sorts of yourself that you had to split in childhood to survive —what a thrill.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I think Covid 2019 is a great example of realizing I can do hard things and I always find a way to win. Owning a theater and acting school in New York City in height of Covid was so scary. Having had so much of my identity in what I do (now who I was) was challenged —my world fell apart, such fear, my relationship with my partner fell apart and I felt like who I was —was my job my self worth was caught up in what I do not who I am. It is the best thing that ever happened to me. My false identity got ruined and had to rebuilt my life from the ground up. I re did the book the artist way, got into Michael singers work The Untethered Soul listened to tons of Tony Robbins and podcast that coached me out of my old story and mindset into a new compelling future that I get to be responsible for and co create.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I think a big paradigm shift was realizing I had a subconscious belief that if I was going to be successful I have to do it alone or I will be alone so I would sabotage my successes in fear of being alone. Once I uncovered that old belief system I rebuilt it with creating a team and a community and impacting others and employing people I love is my mission. I turned my fears into my mission. It’s about crating community in the arts and not doing it alone. Big shifts.
