Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Eliza Steinberg. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Eliza, thanks for joining us today. Have you ever had an amazing boss, mentor or leader leading you? Can you us a story or anecdote that helps illustrate why this person was such a great leader and the impact they had on you or their team?
I was extremely fortunate to find a mentor at the very beginning of my career. After graduating from the University of Denver in the fall out of the Great Recession, I was fortunate enough to get a job as a personal assistant to the managing partner of a highly regarded law firm. Incredibly, I am now a shareholder alongside that same managing partner in the same law firm.
Suzanne Griffiths is my career mentor. She has shaped the attorney I am today, and she guided me through my early career and law school–always holding me to the highest standard. Suzanne is a pioneer for women in business, and I am just one example of many who have benefitted from her wisdom and guidance. My story from personal assistant to firm shareholder is a shining example of her authenticity as a powerful women in business and her mission to teach and train the next generation of leaders.
Eliza, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a family law attorney at Griffiths Law. Griffiths Law is a boutique litigation firm that specializes in family law and civil litigation. My family law practice encompasses divorce, division of assets and debt, child custody disputes, matters of support, enforcement of orders, modification of orders, and protection orders. I have spent my entire legal career at Griffiths Law because it is a firm with integrity that provides top-notch representation to our family law and civil clients. I always tell people that you either have the personality to work in family law or you do not. It is an emotionally charged area of the law that requires a great deal of passion and empathy. I have always been fascinated by psychology, and family law brings a human element that you do not see in many other types of legal practices. Family law cases are deeply personal for the parties involved because we are litigating about children, financial support, division of assets and debts—all issues that materially impact the future. I practice in this area of law because I can make a positive difference in people’s lives. My goal is not only to get them the best possible outcome through a settlement or in the courtroom but to get them through this process in one piece and not let the process itself cause more harm. I have worked in family law my entire career and have no plans to ever do anything different.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The majority of my clients are referred to me by past or existing clients. This is the highest compliment I could possibly receive knowing that my past and existing clients are happy with their representation and similarly trust me in handling any family law matters for their friends and family. My reputation has been built on this referral based network and through positive online reviews of satisfied clients.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The four years where I was working 40+ hours a week and attending law school in the evenings now feels like a blur, but when I consider the dedication and hard work required to succeed in those circumstances, I am a little in awe of my former self. It was not a smooth road. It took a long time to figure out the balance and allocate time to specifically take care of myself. The struggle to maintain a healthy work-life balance is ongoing (especially with two kids!), but I feel like I improve at it a little more each year. The support of my husband, my friends, my co-workers, and my family was instrumental in getting me through law school, and they continue to help me now. My stress outlet is hiking, being present for my kids, and spending time in the Colorado mountains—this passion gets me through stressful times. My family has been in Colorado for five generations (on both sides!) and hiking has been a part of my life since I was a child. Our hikes have changed a bit since having kids, but I love showing them new experiences and teaching them to enjoy the Colorado outdoors.
